Excerpt from The Conflict, Vol. 1 of 2 Late autumn, the little season in London; carriages moving to and fro in the dusk of the worst-lighted city in Europe; dead leaves blown by the damp south-west wind, drifting across Piccadilly; a something of dreariness, a something of gaiety in the air. On such an evening Walter Arden left his club, after an accustomed rubber, as the Abbey clock struck seven, and sauntered dreamily across St. James's Square to his lodgings in Jermyn Street. An idler, and always something of a dreamer, his reverie was deeper than usual tonight. He had been absent-minded at cards, and had played a losing game, to the disgust of his partner. It had been one of his bad days. Since the first dawn of reason he had been subject to periods of depression, intervals in which his spirits sank to zero, and the disgust of life took hold of him. What right had he to live? what motive had he for life, - he who was of no use to any living creature, whom nobody loved or valued? Excerpt from The Conflict: A Novel As the long strides of the tall, slender man brought him rapidly nearer; his face came into plain view. A refined, handsome face, dark and serious. He had dark-brown eyes - and Miss Hastings did not like brown eyes in a man. She thought that men should have gray or blue or greenish eyes, and if they were cruel in their love of power she liked it the better. Excerpt from A Half-Century of Conflict, Vol. 1 of 2: France and England in North America Part Sixth The manuscript material collected for the preparation of the series now complete forms about seventy volumes, most of them folios. These have been given by me from time to time to the Massachusetts Historical Society, in whose library they now are, open to the examination of those interested in the subjects of which they treat. The collection was begun forty-five years ago, and its formation has been exceedingly slow, having been retarded by difficulties which seemed insurmountable, and for years were so in fact. Hence the completion of the series has required twice the time that would have sufficed under less unfavorable conditions. Illustration has been an integral part of human history. Particularly before the advent of media such as photography, film, television, and now the Internet, illustrations in all their variety had been the primary visual way to convey history. The comic book, which emerged in its modern form in the 1930s, was another form of visual entertainment that gave readers, especially children, a form of escape. As World War II began, however, comic books became a part of propaganda as well, providing information and education for both children and adults. This book looks at how specific comic books of the war genre have been used to display patriotism, adventure through war stories, and eventually to tell of the horrors of combat—from World War II through the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan in the first decade of the twenty-first century. This book also examines how war-and patriotically-themed comics evolved from soldier-drawn reflections of society, eventually developing along with the broader comic book medium into a mirror of American society during times of conflict. These comic books generally reflected patriotic fervor, but sometimes they advanced a specific cause. As war comic books evolved along with American society, many also served as a form of protest against United States foreign and military policy. During the country’s most recent wars, however, patriotism has made a comeback, at the same time that the grim realities of combat are depicted more realistically than ever before. The focus of the book is not only on the development of the comic book medium, but also as a bell-weather of society at the same time. How did they approach the news of the war? Were people in favor or against the fighting? Did the writers of comics promote a perception of combat or did they try to convey the horrors of war? All of these questions were important to the research, and serve as a focal point for what has been researched only in limited form previously. The conclusions of the book show that comic books are more than mere forms of entertainment. Comic books were also a way of political protest against war, or what the writers felt were wider examples of governmental abuse. In the post 9/11 era, the comic books have returned to their propagandistic/patriotic roots.

Excerpt from The Ten Years' Conflict, Vol. 1 of 2: Being the History of the Disruption of the Church of Scotland The object of this work is to explain the causes and to trace the history of the Disruption of the Established Church of Scotland. The principles involved in that ecclesiastical convulsion, have an immediate bearing both on the constitution and prerogatives of the Church of Christ, and on the great question of its relation to the civil power. The subject is therefore one of catholic importance, and it derives additional and peculiar interest from the character of the present times. In one form or another the points at issue in the Ten Years' Conflict are at this moment, in almost every nation of Europe, the ques tions of the day.
