Excerpt from The Christian Union Quarterly, Vol. 5: A Journal in the Interest of Peace in the Divided Church of Christ; July, 1915 The Object of Unity. If the Lord had enjoined unity upon His followers, this would have been sufficient to make their duty clear; but He has done more than this: He has pointed 'out the reason for it, in the words that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me. The unity of the Church is the quality which is to give conviction to its evidence. This fact points to the function of the Church as an institution among men: to testify concerning 'christ. What is the evidence which this witness is to give? Certainly that which St. John declares to be the substance of the Gospel, that God has given us eternal life, and this life IS In His Son. The Church testifies to the world in two ways: by'its existence and by its acts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Christian Union Quarterly, Vol. 7: July, 1917 Once union appeared to be largely a theological prob lem, but students are now seeing it has clearly as much. To do with psychology, for our differences in many in stances are temperamental. Into this field we must go cautiously, seeking to adjust our differences by tempera ment rather than by theology. Perhaps more than the ology or psychology is the necessity of the higher ethical standard. The scandal of our pride, conceit, love of self, jealousy and other works of the flesh are known around the world. These must be got rid of, as the drunkard gets rid of his drunkenness, the fornicator of his forni cation and the idolater of his idolatry. These are the great sms that are barriers far above all the theological or psychological differences, so the emphasis 'of these times must be upon the fundamentals of the religion of Christ rather than upon secondary issues. Excerpt from The Christian Union Quarterly, Vol. 18: July, 1928 Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists, and Presbyterians took part. They discussed the Stockholm Conference of 1925, the Lausanne Conference of 1927, and the Baltimore Conference of 1928, and also the Federal Council Of the Churches of Christ in America, with particular emphasis on our Next Step Toward Christian Unity. It opened with celebrating the Lord's Supper in Grace Cathedral, in which all the communions represented took part. This was a normal conference on Christian unity partaking of the Lord's Supper together and then spending a day in conference on how to find the way to unity. Would that there were a hundred such conferences throughout the United States this year and next. The Christian Unity League has announced that it will hold its next conference in Kansas City, January 16 and 17, 1929. Other cities may be included, but the necessity of a united Christendom must constantly be kept before the Church by these free conferences where all may come and share In the discussmns. Unity cannot come unless the whole Church moves together. In an article in The Living Church Most Rev. John Gard ner Murray, presiding bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church, raises the question as to Where Lausanne Failed. Such a caption for an article from Bishop Murray awakens sur prise, when it is remembered that his church largely sponsored the Lausanne Conference. Had he raised the question as to where N icea failed, when bishops boxed each others' jaws, tore each o'thers' garments in their fist fights, and so kicked one of their number that he died a few days after, perhaps it might have been proper, although it is like digging up some of the escapades of Herod or Constantine, which might as well be left undisturbed. Church history will do itself credit if it gives only a paragraph of a few lines to Nicea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
