Excerpt from The History of the Dominion of Canada The subject of Canadian history has been usually treated in the textbooks authorized in elementary and secondary schools from a Provincial rather than a Dominion standpoint. Such works at best do not meet our present need, as they necessarily fail to give adequate recognition to all sections of the country, and as they often contain exaggerated notions of provincial matters. It was thought by many teachers that this mode of treatment should be changed and a wider view presented of the history and consolidation of the Dominion. In 1889 the Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers discussed the feasibility of preparing a history of Canada with this object in view, and in the following year the Teachers' Associations of Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia, also considered the same subject. In July, 1891, representatives of the different provinces met at the Education Department in Toronto, for a further consideration of the question. Nevertheless, it was not until July, 1892, at the meeting of the Dominion Educational Association in Montreal, that a scheme was formulated for the preparation of a text-book by competition, and a committee was appointed to examine such manuscripts as might be offered. The capital and the population which will be attracted in this way to Canada, moreover, will be British, a con sideration of patriotic and Imperial importance, in view of the increase of foreign immigration into Canada and of the influx of foreign capital. Excerpt from The First "New Province" Of the Dominion Throughout the developments hitherto the attitude of the Hudson's Bay Company seems to have been regarded as a secon dary consideration: a fact which is not altogether to be explained by the vehemence of Canadian claims or the apathy of the British government. The old Company had been bought in 1863 by the International Financial Company, with Sir Edmund Head him self as the new Governor. It was argued, not without a measure of justice, that the purchase of Hudson's Bay stock with full knowledge of the conditions weakened very materially any claim which the old Company might have advanced for special con sideration. Excerpt from The Great Dominion: Studies of Canada Canadian life, the most important of the problems which confront Canadians, and those external relations which have the greatest general interest. It has been a satisfaction to find that throughout Canada they have, in their original form, been very generally accepted as fair statements of the questions with which they deal. As I have never hesitated to point out the drawbacks and limitations of the country as well as its advantages, this approval seems to indicate that Canadians have reached a point where they are quite willing that the merits and defects of their country should be freely weighed together. The fact marks an important stage in the growth of a self-reliant feeling in a young community. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Dominion of Canada and the Canadian Pacific Railway Now assuming, and I think that the assumption is a fair one, that the longevity and fecundity of the people of Canada are not less than of the people of England, the ratio of increase in Canada should be equal to that of England, and taking into account the fact that between 1860 and 1870 there was a large emigration from England and a large immigration into Canada, it is evident that the ratio of increase in Canada ought in that period to have been greater than in England - as we have seen the Dominion census shows it to have been less.
