Excerpt from The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night, Vol. 1 The present is, I believe, the first complete trans lation of the great Arabic compendium of romantic fiction that has been attempted in any European language, comprising about four times as much matter as that of Galland and three times as much as that Of any other translator known to myself; and a short statement Of the sources from which it is derived may therefore be acceptable to my readers. Three printed editions, more or less complete, exist of the Arabic text of the Thousand and One Nights; namely, those of Breslau, Boulac (cairo) and Calcutta besides an incomplete one, comprising the first two hundred nights only, published at Calcutta in 1814. Of these, the first is horribly corrupt and greatly inferior, both in style and completeness, to the others, and the second (that of Boulac) is also, though in a far less degree, incomplete, whole stories (as, for instance, that of the Envier and the Envied in the present volume) being omitted and hiatuses, varying in extent from a few lines to several pages, being Of frequent occurrence, whilst in addition to these defects, the editor, a learned Egyptian, has played havoc with the style Of his original, in an ill-judged attempt to improve it, producing a medley, more curious than edifying, of classical and semi modern diction and now and then, in his unlucky zeal, completely disguising the pristine meaning of certain passages. The third edition, that which we owe to Sir William Macnaghten and which appears to have been printed from a superior copy of the manuscript followed by the Egyptian editor, is by far the most carefully printed and edited of the three and offers, on the whole, the least corrupt and most comprehensive text of the work. I have therefore adopted it as my standard or basis of translation and have, to the best of my power, remedied the defects (such as hiatuses, misprints, doubtful or cor rupt passages, etc.) which are of no infrequent occurrence even in this, the best of the existing texts, by carefully collating it with the editions of Boulac and Breslau (to say nothing of occasional references to the earlier Calcutta edition of the first two hundred nights), adopting from one and the other such variants, additions and corrections as seemed to me best calculated to improve the general effect and most homogeneous with the general spirit of the work, and this so freely that the present version may be said, in great part, to represent a variorum text of the original, formed by a collation of the different printed texts; and no proper estimate can, therefore, be made of the fidelity of the translation. Excerpt from The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night, Vol. 1: From the Arabic of the AEgyptian M. S I was stimulated to this undertaking, by feeling that even the best English rendering of these tales. Dr. Scott's, was not a translation, but that it professed merely to be occasionally corrected from the Arabic, the ground work being the French of Monsr. Galland. I further reflected that, Messrs. Langles and Coussin de Perseval, the learned countrymen of that well known scholar, have both the one and the other, acknowledged the defects of his translation, as neither verbally literal nor faithful in its picture of manners, and I considered that this faultiness, was not likely to become less glaring in a translated translation. I also bore in mind, that the attempt to give the most peculiar and characteristic portion of these tales, the poetic in the form of poetry, had been hitherto eschewed by all professing translators. On these considerations was the work undertaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Famously known as "The Arabian Nights" in the English-speaking world, this 389-page book is the first of 10 volumes consisting of Middle Eastern and South Asian mythical and folkloric accounts translated in English. This is acknowledged to be the authoritative and complete translation of the Arabian Nights. It is also one of two complete and unabridged English translations from the 1880s. Although it appears the Arabian Nights collection written is positively massive, it is considered by the author as "a labor of love, an unfailing source of solace and satisfaction." For this gargantuan effort, many are now being enriched and delighted by the fascinating Oriental and Middle Eastern stories compiled within. Because of the author's efforts to stay as true to the original as possible and that this has been translated in late 1800s, the sentences give way to more archaic language and over-the-top idioms. This particular book, being the first volume, sets the stage for the the Arabian Nights, beginning with the story of King Shahryar and his brother, which is the thread that weaves through and binds the stories together. This then leads the reader to the tale of the trader and the jinni, the fisherman and the jinni, the porter and the ladies of Baghdad, the three apples, and all through the barber's tale. The more famous ones, such as Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, Sinbad, Aladdin, among others, come later. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT, vol 1 by Richard Francis Burton he Mardrus-Mathers version of "The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night," more colloquially know as the "Arabian Nights," is one of the few near-complete modern translations in English. This work was translated from Arabic to French by Mardrus, then from French to English by Mathers. The stories themselves were composed and compiled over the course of several hundred years from the ninth through probably the fifteenth centuries. It is a work of staggering length; the four volumes together total 2,341 pages. The translation is unexpurgated, meaning that at times it is quite sexually explicit. And it is ironic that it is so widely known as the Arabian Nights, since very few if any of the stories take place in Arabia. Most of them take place in what is now Iraq, some in Egypt, and even one in China. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
