"In spite of being an intense, strong, and graphically violent book, The Birdcatcher is filled with some of the extraordinary beautiful writing I have ever read. Your book is a brilliant existential masterpiece that accurately portrays the unrelenting, extremely realistic, brutal renderings of war couple with some of the most profound, original thinking on religion and redemption I ever encountered in literature." --Rachel Stephenson, proofreader and literary critic The year is 1972, a time when the world witnessed the most intense and horrific fighting of the entire campaign against North Vietnam. Without compromise, The Birdcatcher, a religious-thriller, reveals how men lost their lives as one terrible battle after another decimated the forces on the ground and in the air above Vietnam while exploring the questions of man's relationship with God and with each other. It was a time of unanswerable questions for all: What kind of men endure under impossible conditions? What do they think and feel when there is no guarantee of tomorrow? What causes a hero to fall? What allows a villain to survive? "Mr. Schenck is a very talented and intelligent. The best of his written work (in my short story writing class) was a breathtakingly good story - a strong, violent, moving tale set in Vietnam. . . .a visionary."--Professor David Carkeet "Your work is often of astonishing brilliance with some of the most powerful writing I've ever seen in a writer. I would expect you to become a writer of serious note. I am deeply impressed by your book." --1st FCCJ Intelligent Eye Critique "Powerful writing! Excellent action writing! Amazing talent." --2nd FCCJ Intelligent Eye Critique

“Gayl Jones’s work represents a watershed in American literature." —Imani Perry Legendary writer Gayl Jones returns with a stunning new novel about Black American artists in exile Gayl Jones, the novelist Toni Morrison discovered decades ago and Tayari Jones recently called her favorite writer, has been described as one of the great literary writers of the 20th century. Now, for the first time in over 20 years, Jones is publishing again. In the wake of her long-awaited fifth novel, Palmares, The Birdcatcher is another singular achievement, a return to the circles of her National Book Award finalist, The Healing. Set primarily on the island of Ibiza, the story is narrated by the writer Amanda Wordlaw, whose closest friend, a gifted sculptor named Catherine Shuger, is repeatedly institutionalized for trying to kill a husband who never leaves her. The three form a quirky triangle on the white-washed island. A study in Black women’s creative expression, and the intensity of their relationships, this work from Jones shows off her range and insight into the vicissitudes of all human nature - rewarding longtime fans and bringing her talent to a new generation of readers.

This collection of Japanese folk plays reveals a previously unknown and decidedly unaristocratic element to Japanese theater. Interspersed between the stately, slower paced dramas of Japan’s Noh theater are the delightful comic plays or interludes known as Kyogen. These brief plays evolved from the bawdy skits that were rousingly enjoyed by the plebeian populaces of the cities in feudal Japan some hundreds of years ago when Noh itself was a pastime and entertainment exclusively reserved for the aristocracy. Today they still provide delightful relief from the sustained and concentrated action of the Noh play that has changed very little throughout the centuries. Among the various forms of classical Japanese drama, the flamboyant action and brilliant coloring Kabuki has perhaps enabled it to be the most easily understood; and the Noh, in a number of excellent translations, has become widely known for its poetic beauty. But the Kyogen, equally deserving of attention, have remained relatively unknown. Only now, with this new edition of Miss Sakanishi's excellent translations, are they at last readily available to the Western reader.
