The Battle on the Kalinov-bridge retells an exciting Russian fairy tale as seen through the text and illustrations of Natalia G. Toreeva. However, she does not give a word-by-word translation of the tale. In this story I have tried to stay close to the original, but I have attempted to tell the story by my own words and meanings, and to a contemporary audience. Normally Russian fairy tales were not written specifically for children or adults, so everyone could find their own meaning. While children may be fascinated by the adventures of boys battling several-headed serpents, adults would consider the hidden meaning of the symbolic battle, interpreting it as a fight between good and evil. In the end, all will learn an important lesson about friendship and loyalty, which should be given to each other and to your country. Originally from Leningrad (now St. Petersburg, Russia),

In the view of many folklorists the images, motifs and characters that occur in fairy tales the world over, have their origins in the earliest beliefs, customs and ways of life of the people who tell the tales. When sacred tales, laws and rites no longer have a living etiological purpose or relevance, they gradually evolve into what is known as the folk or fairy tale, told mainly to elicit wonder or delight. This book looks at the cultural background, history and mythology of the East Slavs with the aim of discovering the possible origins of certain elements in the Russian Fairy Tale, known as the Skazka. It examines the various types of hero or heroine that people it, their adventures and journeys to the Other World, and the fearsome beings such as the Baba-Yaga, the Zmei and Koshchei whom they meet either on the way to, or in the Other World. The study hopes to shed light on why Russian fairy tale personages act in certain ways, what they might be thought to represent and how they reflect some of the most ancient beliefs known to mankind, in particular, worship of the Mother Goddess, the Earth Goddess.

Nabokov's art of prose, as it evolved over the half-a-century of concentrated creativity in two languages, is a prodigiously intricate phenomenon. Many of its fascinating secrets remain sealed, despite a torrent of interpretative literature. The essays that form Aerial View probe and light numerous such recesses, in many instances seldom or never visited before. The book alerts the serious student of both Russian and English works by Nabokov to the deep functional relationship between the artistic properties of his fiction (such as composition, narrative techniques, and style) and its implied philosophy of creation and afterlife. In a special appendix, many archival documents by and about Nabokov are published and annotated for the first time.
