Excerpt from The Annals of the English Bible, Vol. 1 Certain portentous signs, unexpectedly marking our own day, and at which not a few have been startled, very power fully invite the general mind to the sacred text, in its all sufficiency, by itself alone, or to the Bible without note and comment. But without even glancing at these here, to the Sacred Volume, in our native tongue, considered simply in the light of a printed book, there happily belong two pecu liarities, more than sufficient to fix the mind, with intense interest, on its origin and history. These are the number of its copies, and the extent to which it is now in perusal. Neither the one, nor the other, has yet been rendered so pal pahle, as to engage the notice they deserve, and which they will, at last, certainly secure. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Hitherto our knowledge of what happened between the Rivers Oder and Dniepr from AD 965 to AD 1480 has come largely from western sources. This English translation and abridgement of Jan Dlugosz' Annales seu cronici incliti regni Poloniae, a medieval chonicle ranked on the level of those of Froissart and de Commynes, opens up the history of Eastern Europe to the non-Polish reader. The abridgement is on the basis of readability and the text contains a number of interesting stories, such as that of a tramp revealed in death to be a secret royal courier.
