Excerpt from A True Representation of the Plan Formed at Albany, in 1754, for Uniting All the British Northern Colonies, in Order to Their Common Safety and Defence The Plan of Union, which is presented in the following pages, is no new thing to the student of American history. Mr. Sparks, in his edition of the works of Franklin, has given many pages to its presentation and explanation; Mr. Bancroft, in his History, has also done it ample justice. It is full of interest, and in the light of our subsequent history, it must ever be regarded as one of those coming events which cast their shadows before. The mass of the colonists were not in favor of the proposition, but leading minds in every colony fore saw the necessity of a unity of action between the colonies, and thus they planted the seed which grew and ripened into fruit a quarter of a century later.
