Excerpt from Report on the Agricultural Experiment Stations, 1950 Clinton, currently the most widely grown oats, and 11 or more other named Bond derivatives have been distributed in many States. Shelby, another new productive, stiff-strawed oats, is being increased for release In 1951. It combines most good points of its parents (bond and Anthony) which have high quality grain and test weight. Shelby is more resistant to smuts and more uniform in height and maturity than Clinton. Although Shelby is not entirely resistance to race 45 of crown rust, its yields have not been lowered much by that disease. Excerpt from Agricultural Experiment Stations: Their Objects and Work Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith for publication as a bul letih of this Office a brief summary of the objects, organization, and work of the agricultural experiment stations in the United States. This publication will in a sense be supplementary to. Farmers' Bulletin N o 1, The What and Why of Agricultural Experiment Stations, issued soon after the establishment of this Office and now out of print. The com plexity of the organization and operations of the stations makes it difficult to clearly present in condensed form even the main features of this great system, but it is hoped that this bulletin Will at least enable' the reader to correctly interpret the general purpose for Which the stat tions were established and to appreciate in some degree the vastness of the enterprise which the people of this country are maintaining in the effort to utilize the methods and results of scientific inquiry for the benefit of agriculture. Respectfully, A. O. True, Director. Hon. J. Sterling morton, Secretary of Agriculture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Digest of the Annual Reports of the Agricultural Experiment Stations in the United States, Vol. 2: For 1888 There can be no doubt that the listing in itself was a real benefit to the crop. It is an interesting fact, too, that the drilled plats show small advantage, other things equal, over the plats that were planted in hills. Excerpt from Report on the Agricultural Experiment Stations, 1954 Scientific research at the State agricultural experiment stations and those in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico contributes daily to the abundance of American life. That there is an abundance of food is reflected in the increase per capita food consumption of the Nation, even in the face of a 22 percent increase in population since 1940. Farm produc tion of food and fiber has increased by 44 percent, however, since that time, resulting in an ample supply of food and feeds, and even in some cases in a surplus. This record rate of farm production, which now appears to be the rule and not the exception, may be attributed in large measure to the increased efficiency arising from better management practices derived from the agricultural research program.
