This volume is a tribute to the work of legal and social historian and Arabist Rudolph Peters (University of Amsterdam). Presenting case studies from different periods and areas of the Muslim world, the book examines the use of legal documents for the study of the history of Muslim societies. From examinations of the conceptual status of legal documents to comparative studies of the development of legal formulae and the socio-economic or political historical information documents contain, the aim is to approach legal documents as specialised texts belonging to a specific social domain, while simultaneously connecting them to other historical sources. It discusses the daily functioning of legal institutions, the reflections of regime changes on legal documentation, daily life, and the materiality of legal documents. Contributors are Maaike van Berkel, Maurits H. van den Boogert, Léon Buskens, Khaled Fahmy, Aharon Layish, Sergio Carro Martín, Brinkley Messick, Toru Miura, Christian Müller, Petra M. Sijpesteijn, Mathieu Tillier, and Amalia Zomeño.

Excerpt from Studies in English Official Historical Documents Amongst the numerous works which have dealt, at different times, with the history of the Public Records and with the description of their nature or uses, it is scarcely surprising that the great majority are due to the professional zeal of native archivists. We should also be prepared to find that, with several important exceptions these works have been produced by private and not by official enterprise. The bibliography of this class of antiquarian literature is, indeed, extensive and includes, besides the elementary essays of 16th and 17th century official antiquaries, several valuable works produced during the Victorian period. Moreover, during the last thirty years, these unofficial printed books may be supplemented by numerous articles and other periodical essays which are not exclusively published in antiquarian journals. At the same time none of these published books or articles will be found to deal in a comprehensive manner with the several aspects of the national Archives which concern the historical student. The practical Guide to the official sources does not indulge in any disquisitions upon their formulas or scripts. Similarly the hand-book of Palaeography is not concerned with the historical aspect of these documents, nor does the essay in Diplomatic deal with the principles of their classification. Documentation has always been crucial in human society. Today almost all communication are being stored digitally. In order to deal systematically and coherently with old and new media in the world today, you have to deal with the physical as well as the social and cultural context. Alongside this, there is now increasing interest in documentation theory and science, and documentation studies has become a distinctly lively field of research as well as a basis for professional practice in libraries, archives and museums. This groundbreaking new book introduces and demonstrates the value and relevance of a new approach to the documentation, communication and information field, complementary to the traditional library, information and archival sciences. It offers an introduction to documentation studies - a new discipline within the overall information studies umbrella - and gives a broad and general theory for documentation. It outlines the historical background and the theoretical foundation for the discipline by giving insight into documentation issues and processes from early modern society to today's digital age: not only in the context of academic study, but also in the practice of documentation, both in everyday life and in professional life. Key topics covered include: Human life in a documentation perspective Documentation in theory Documentation: a conceptual history A complementary theory of documentation A model for documentation analysis Documentation in practice: 6 case studies Documentation in society The science and profession of documentation. This unique text outlines the main scientific purpose and objective of the science of documentation; to study documentation in society. It also describes the main skills for a documentalist in the 21st century; to be able to select, collect and make accessible all documentation of possible interest for the general public as well as research. This book will be pivotal reading for students (advanced undergraduate and graduate), researchers, and faculty in library science, information science, records management, publishing, media studies, cultural studies, archival studies, and information systems. It will also be of interest to thoughtful professionals in libraries, archives, records and media. 010
