"(SHRP 2): Saving Lives, Reducing Congestion, Improving Quality of Life explores promising results expected from the SHRP 2 research and provides recommendations on how they could be most effectively implemented. The committee that developed the report believes that the widespread implementation of products developed by SHRP 2 is critical in order to address the nation's roadway safety, renewal, reliability, and capacity issues." -- provided by publisher.

Through its initial planning efforts - with major involvement of the transportation and research communities - the NSTC Committee on transportation R & D has developed the first Transportation Science and technology Strategy to help Congress, the White house, and Federal agency heads to establish national transportation R & D priorities and coordinated research activities. The Strategy is based on the results of numerous outreach events, environmental scans, and an analysis of the transportation systems current and future strengths, weaknesses opportunities, and threats.

The 2005 Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users authorized the Dept. of Transportation (DoT) to establish a highway research program to address future challenges facing the U.S. highway system. In 2006, the Second Strategic Highway Research Program was established to conduct research in four areas -- safety, renewal, reliability, and capacity. The legislation also required a review of the program no later than three years after the first research contracts were awarded. This report provides information about the process for selecting the program's projects for funding, the projects' status, and what, if any, research was eliminated because of funding and time constraints. Charts and tables.

TRB Special Report 295, The Federal Investment in Highway Research, 2006-2009: Strengths and Weaknesses assesses how well the investments that Congress made in research programs through the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users comply with the principles articulated in the preface to the act's research title. The book contains findings and recommendations about specific research programs and calls for reliance on competition and merit review in awarding funds through the Federal Highway Administration and in selecting institutions for the University Transportation Centers program of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration.

The level of research activity in the highway sector as a whole has declined precipitously in recent decades, whilst the challenges facing US state highway agencies have escalated. As a result, a Strategic Highway Research Program - SHRP) was initiated to establish collaboration with research bodies tackling similar highway problems in countries worldwide. This collection of reports from around the world presents SHRP`s progress towards providing research-based new products from which the international highway engineering community may benefit. SHRP concentrates on six high-priority research areas: asphaltic materials; pavement performance; cement and concrete; maintenance cost effectiveness; concrete bridge component protection systems and the chemical control of snow and ice.
