My raison dtre. This is a book of my memoirs, but it is more than that. It goes back in time to include stories I have heard since childhood about my forefathers (and mothers). I am grateful that the writing bug has been so strong in the Falla family. I look on whatever writing abilities I have as a gift. To me, it is more than a hobbyits a passion! The histories that were written by Uncle Art Falla in the history books of Kinsella and District (Hoofprints and Homesteading) and of Sedgewick and District (Sedgewick Sentinel) were invaluable in my writing of this book. Picking the brains of family memberssisters, cousins, and Aunt Thordis Taylor have been of enormous assistance. While our memories of any particular incident may not be exactly the same, the sharing and the jogging has made the memories I have come alive. In 2005, my original book Collections & Recollections: 1st edition was printed. It is a book of memoirs. I have received wonderful feedback on that book and hope that you enjoy this book as much as did the readers of Collections & Recollections: 1st edition. I have lived too interesting a life to not leave this legacy. It seemed only right to include stories about my childrens paternal ancestors, the Snethuns and the Sathers. After having been married to Andy Snethun for fifty-five years, in many ways, these families seem like my family. I hope you enjoy following the unique lives of several generations of these pioneer families. I have really tried to write only stories that very few of my readers will be able to say, That happened to me too. Scattered throughout my memoirs, you will find poetry, all of which are my originals. Sometimes I write poetry like I talknot knowing when to quit! I write poetry as long as the thoughts keep coming. (I try to control myself when I talk so I dont do the same).

Go inside the transition from steam to diesel, the pinnacle of rail travel and the development of the South through much of the 20th century. The Southern Railway was the pinnacle of rail service in the South for nearly 100 years. Its roots stretch back to 1827, when the South Carolina Canal & Rail Road Company was founded in Charleston to provide freight transportation and America's first regularly scheduled passenger service. Through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Great Depression, rail lines throughout the South continued to merge, connecting Washington, D.C. to Atlanta and Charleston to Memphis. The Southern Railway was born in 1893 at the height of these mergers. It came to an end in 1982, merging with Norfolk and Western Railway to become Norfolk Southern Railway. The history of the railway lives on, however, and Norfolk Southern continues to "serve the South." In 2003, the Southern Railway Historical Association selected the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History as the repository for its extensive archives. Included in this collection are hundreds of professional quality, black-and-white photographs taken by company photographers throughout the railway's history. While a few of these images have been seen by the public, the vast majority have not.

The memoirs of Franz von Papen offer a fascinating view of the German Hierarchy from the reign of the last Kaiser to the reign of terror of Adolf Hitler. Although there is an element of self-justification, Conservative von Papen lays bare the machinations of the German politicians that led to Hitler to supreme power in Germany. Born into a wealthy, but not aristocratic, family in 1879 von Papen he started his career in the Imperial German Army rising to the General Staff and a diplomatic posting in America by 1914. He was involved in some very murky dealings as an intriguer behind the scenes in America, Canada before he was sent back to Germany, setting a precedent for later backroom dealings. After the close of the First World War he entered politics, as a Conservative Monarchist member of the Centre party, in the political chaos of the period he advanced swiftly owing to shrewd interparty dealings. He was eventually appointed Chancellor in 1932 mainly due to political friendships rather than his own political acumen; beset by huge political problems he sought to appease the vocal right wing parties. Without serious support in the Reichstag, von Papen governed by decree undermining Democracy, starting a process mastered later by Hitler himself. Outmaneuvered by Hitler and the Nazis he was forced from power, and by his foolish machinations set Hitler set up as Chancellor. Cast out of power von Papen was a broken reed, but as a still high-ranking observer to the Second World his memoirs are of vital importance in understanding Hitler’s war-mongering advances into Austria, Poland and France. He was captured by U.S. forces in 1945, he was put on trial for war crimes but was acquitted.
