@Published in 1919 when Lewis was only twenty, these early poems give an insight into the author's youthful agnosticism. The poems are written in various metrical forms, but are unified by a central idea, expressing his conviction that nature was malevolent and beauty the only true spirituality. Preface by Walter Hooper.@@

Before he became famous for writing Narnia, C.S. Lewis published this stunning collection of poetry. Drawing on his experiences as a soldier in World War I, Lewis explores themes of loss, faith, and the struggle for meaning in a world that seems devoid of it. Professor Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963), commonly referred to as C. S. Lewis and known to his friends as Jack, was a Northern Irish academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, and Christian apologist. He is also known for his fiction, especially The Screwtape Letters (1942), The Space Trilogy (1938-1945) and The Chronicles of Narnia (1949-1954). According to his memoir Surprised by Joy (1955), Lewis had been baptised in the Church of Ireland at birth, but fell away from his faith during his adolescence. Owing to the influence of Tolkien and other friends, at about the age of 30, he re-converted to Christianity, becoming "a very ordinary layman of the Church of England." His works have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold millions of copies over the years. His works include: Spirits in Bondage (1919), Dymer (1926), The Pilgrim's Regress (1933), The Allegory of Love (1936), Out of the Silent Planet (1938), Prince Caspian (1951), The Silver Chair (1953), The Horse and His Boy (1954) and The Magician's Nephew (1955).
