Soni, a physically and mentally challenged child in Haiti spent years confined to his crib until one day some street children took over the operation of the orphanage. Working with parents is a significant aspect of educators’ roles, yet it is rare to find curriculum in teacher education programs designed to prepare individuals to consider, in philosophical, theoretical, and pedagogical ways, who they will be in relationship with parents and why. Schools, therefore, remain hierarchical structures in which parents are marginalized in relation to decisions affecting teaching and learning. This book begins with Pushor’s conceptualization of a “curriculum of parents,” a curriculum which explores beliefs and assumptions about parents, a vision for education in which educators work alongside parents and family members in the learning and care of children, and a desire for reform. She describes a curriculum of parents, in the form of three graduate teacher education courses, which she lived out in relationship with students. Graduate students then capture their experiences immersed in this curriculum – what they each took up, how it shaped their knowledge, attitudes, and practices, and how they lived it out as they returned to their classrooms, schools, and early learning centres. This book is a storied account of their intense immersion in a curriculum of parents and the resulting impact living that curriculum has had on who they are in relation to parents and families. It is an honest and vulnerable account of their shared and individual journeys. They puzzle over the complexities and the successes of their work and the resulting impact. This is not a book of best practice, but an invitation to other educators to consider, as they did, what they do and how it could be different.

At the core of Vodou is possession, the thing that frightens many uninformed Westerners and conjures visions of demonic, evil stuff. This is not what I experienced practising Vodou in Haiti. To be filled with the Spirit, to speak in tongues, to channel, to experience a rapture, vision or epiphany of some kind. These are all possessions, when we are temporarily displaced and Spirit moves in. In Vodou this can be quite dramatic but is in no way demonic. To experience up close and personal a Light Being taking you by the hand and talking to you about how you are and what maybe a good thing for you to do is absolutely mind blowing.

When Paul Lea's daughter, Victoria, told him about her planned mission trip with a group of students to Haiti in 2003 to work with orphans, he was not certain how to react especially when she surprised him by telling him that he would be joining her. After he got used to the idea, he worked closely with his daughter in preparing supplies for them to take for the Haitians. When the day of their trip finally arrived, Victoria became ill and was ultimately too sick to make the trip. Paul decided to go without her and document everything that he experienced to share with her. In Live or Die, he chronicles, in aching detail, the terrible conditions in which the children live in Haiti. Through his narrative, we come to know the orphan children he met and the Haitians who worked alongside him. To Paul, the real tragedy is that the women and children of Haiti cannot escape the vicious cycle of poverty and terrible living conditions. Even though the Haitian people have suffered unspeakable abuses throughout their country's history, they have remained a proud people. Despite the fact Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, they have never given up their dream of being able to live freely and govern themselves. In Live and Die, Paul Lea shares his unforgettable experiences and hopes for the people he worked with in Haiti.
