This paper presents a discussion of what it means for children to be considered "at-risk" and how this might influence their social competence and academic achievement. One attempt to improve the social competence of at-risk students has been through participation in after school programs. The present study examined the effects of participating in an after school program for one year on the social competence and academic achievement of at-risk students, compared to at-risk students who did not participate in the program. Results indicated a positive correlation between the measure of social competence and the measures of academic achievement, which supported previous research that also has documented this relationship. However, no significant improvements were found in terms of social competence for either group. Possible explanations for lack of significant data and limitations of the study are discussed.

The study found that students rated highly by their parents and teachers in learning-related social skills show significantly greater growth in reading and math achievement from the fall of kindergarten to the spring of first grade. These findings suggest that policymakers should consider supporting educational policies and programs that seek to develop these learning-related social skills in children prior to school entry and in the early years of formal schooling in order to set children on favorable academic and social courses and promote the attainment of optimal academic success.

The purpose of this study was to determine if children with well-developed social-emotional skills attained higher academic achievement than children who did not have appropriate social-emotional skills. The research included collecting observational data of play time of 24 preschool-aged children (12 girls and 12 boys) enrolled in a summer school readiness program at a local children's center. Children's social-emotional and cognitive skills were observed and assessed using the Hawaii Early Learning Profile (HELP) Developmental Checklist. Over a six-week period, the researcher spent time in the school observing children and tallying when students exhibited a skill from the HELP checklist. The researcher also interviewed the lead teacher to see how many academic skills were achieved by each student. Each subjects' social and academic points were charted. In the end, the researcher concluded that while not all children who had age appropriate cognitive skills had age appropriate emotional skills, in many cases the two did correlate. The author recommends that social and emotional skills be taught in the classroom to facilitate learning.
