Excerpt from Selections From The Works Of Jean Paul Friedrich Richter: Edited, With Introduction And Notes This little volume is intended for students of German who have attained a certain mastery of that language. This object is here expressed, not because the selections are uniformly so difficult, but because a mature mind can better understand and appreciate them. I have tried to avoid such selections as might, from their mere difficulty, discourage the reader, and have also attempted to choose such as should be complete in themselves. This latter circumstance will explain why no extracts have been made from the body of Jean Paul's longer novels, although two or three selections are from such works, but have no organic connection with them. I do not claim that I have made a choice, in each instance, of the best of Jean Paul's shorter writings, but I trust that each selection will be found to possess some power to interest the reader, and that each is representative of some feature of the author's manifold genius and style. Some of the selections have been known to English speaking readers of German Literature since the day of their notice by Carlyle; others, no less deserving of attention, have been known only by name or not at all. The text of nos. IV, V and VI is from Dr. Paul Nerr-lich's edition of selected works which forms vols. 130-134, incl. of Kurschner's Deutsche National-Litteratur; that of the remaining selections is from the third edition of the Samtliche Werke, with the orthography modernized. Excerpt from Life of Jean Paul F. Richter, Vol. 2: Compiled From Various Sources; Together With His Autobiography; Translated From the German I have omitted, for the purpose of concluding the account of Richter's intimate friendship with Madam von Kalb, two events that took place in the autumn, immediately after his return from Weimar. His wide-spread reputation brought him many proposals to become the instructor of young persons; among others the Princess of Hohenlohe came to Hof, and entreated him to take charge of her two sons. The eldest of these princes was afterwards the celebrated Jesuit priest, and worker of miracles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Wit, Wisdom, and Philosophy of Jean Paul Fred; Richter The works of Jean Paul Richter are very little read in America. To the majority, even of educated men, he is only a famous name. Thought treasuries and books of quotations abound with his wise and pungent sayings, and from these sources he is often quoted. The books from which they come are little known. One reason for this is to be found in the fact which Carlyle alleges - that probably there is not in any modern lan guage so intricate a writer. The compiler of this vol ume believes that there are many well-informed people who cannot find time for the laborious task of reading this voluminous author, and yet who would gladly know more about a man whose fame has spread so widely through the world, and whose works are conceded to be classic. The editor believes that he has done the reading pub lic a valuable service in carefully studying the works of Jean Paul, and selecting out of so much that goes almost unread the gems of thought and brilliant analects that no one can afford not to read. This labor itself has been to him a source of great enjoyment and profit. Ameri can readers need to get a larger taste of the inimitable Jean Paul, whereupon it will not be surprising if his works are in increased demand.
