Computer Simulation Studies in Condensed-Matter Physics IX covers recent developments in this field. This workshop was the ninth in this series and was held at the University of Georgia, March 4-9, 1996, and these proceedings form a record which is published with the goal of timely dissemination of the material to a wider audience. This volume is composed of three parts. The first section contains invited papers that deal with simulational studies of classical systems. Simulation means driving a model of a system with suitable inputs and observing the corresponding outputs. It is widely applied in engineering, in business, and in the physical and social sciences. Simulation method ology araws on computer. science, statistics, and operations research and is now sufficiently developed and coherent to be called a discipline in its own right. A course in simulation is an essential part of any operations re search or computer science program. A large fraction of applied work in these fields involves simulation; the techniques of simulation, as tools, are as fundamental as those of linear programming or compiler construction, for example. Simulation sometimes appears deceptively easy, but perusal of this book will reveal unexpected depths. Many simulation studies are statistically defective and many simulation programs are inefficient. We hope that our book will help to remedy this situation. It is intended to teach how to simulate effectively. A simulation project has three crucial components, each of which must always be tackled: (1) data gathering, model building, and validation; (2) statistical design and estimation; (3) programming and implementation. Generation of random numbers (Chapters 5 and 6) pervades simulation, but unlike the three components above, random number generators need not be constructed from scratch for each project. Usually random number packages are available. That is one reason why the chapters on random numbers, which contain mainly reference material, follow the ch!lPters deal ing with experimental design and output analysis.

When this two-day meeting was proposed, it was certainly not conceived as a celebration, much less as a party. However, on reflection, this might have been a wholly appropriate gesture because geostatistical simulation came of age this year: it is now 21 years since it was first proposed and implemented in the form of the turning bands method. The impetus for the original development was the mining industry, principally the problems encountered in mine planning and design based on smoothed estimates which did not reflect the degree of variability and detail present in the real, mined values. The sustained period of development over recent years has been driven by hydrocarbon applications. In addition to the original turning bands method there are now at least six other established methods of geostatistical simulation. Having reached adulthood, it is entirely appropriate that geostatistical simulation should now be subjected to an intense period of reflection and assessment. That we have now entered this period was evident in many of the papers and much of the discussion at the Fontainebleau meeting. Many questions were clearly articulated for the first time and, although many ofthem were not unambiguously answered, their presentation at the meeting and publication in this book will generate confirmatory studies and further research.

This book is an extensive revision of the earlier book with the same title, 1981. The reader who has the first edition will recognise chapters 1-3 and parts of Chapt. 4; thereafter, there is little similarity. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, as one internal Danish publication stated, the first edition contained "et hav af smafejl" meaning (with some poetic license), a sea of troubles. I welcomed the opportunity of setting this right. Secondly, a number of readers rightly criticised my glib dismissal of problems connected with homogeneous chemical reactions in the first edition, now dealt with. Thirdly, digital simulation has not stood still since 1980 and this book reflects the newer developments such as orthogonal collocation, algorithms for the implicit boundary value calculations, as well as my own recent findings. Despite all this activity, no text has appeared to displace that of Feldberg (1969) or my first edition of 1981. My aim is to explain the subject clearly and simply. The electrochemist (or student) who occasionally needs to simulate a diffusion problem numerically but does not wish to go in for sophisticated methods, can make do with the first four chapters. Desk time is then traded for computer time. If this becomes excessive and/or the simulator's interest in more efficient techniques is aroused, Chapt. 5 provides an introduction. The easiest of these is the Runge-Kutta integration method, providing a modest but definite gain in efficiency at very small cost in terms of desk time.
