Assessing the degree to which two objects, an object and a query, or two concepts are similar or compatible is a fundamental component of human reasoning and consequently is critical in the development of automated diagnosis, classification, information retrieval and decision systems. The assessment of similarity has played an important role in such diverse disciplines such as taxonomy, psychology, and the social sciences. Each discipline has proposed methods for quantifying similarity judgments suitable for its particular applications. This book presents a unified approach to quantifying similarity and compatibility within the framework of fuzzy set theory and examines the primary importance of these concepts in approximate reasoning. Examples of the application of similarity measures in various areas including expert systems, information retrieval, and intelligent database systems are provided.

In the world of mathematics, the study of fuzzy relations and its theories are well-documented and a staple in the area of calculative methods. What many researchers and scientists overlook is how fuzzy theory can be applied to industries outside of arithmetic. The framework of fuzzy logic is much broader than professionals realize. There is a lack of research on the full potential this theoretical model can reach. The Handbook of Research on Emerging Applications of Fuzzy Algebraic Structures provides emerging research exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of fuzzy set theory and its real-life applications within the fields of engineering and science. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as complex systems, topological spaces, and linear transformations, this book is ideally designed for academicians, professionals, and students seeking current research on innovations in fuzzy logic in algebra and other matrices.

The field of Soft Computing in Humanities and Social Sciences is at a turning point. The strong distinction between “science” and “humanities” has been criticized from many fronts and, at the same time, an increasing cooperation between the so-called “hard sciences” and “soft sciences” is taking place in a wide range of scientific projects dealing with very complex and interdisciplinary topics. In the last fifteen years the area of Soft Computing has also experienced a gradual rapprochement to disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and also in the field of Medicine, Biology and even the Arts, a phenomenon that did not occur much in the previous years. The collection of this book presents a generous sampling of the new and burgeoning field of Soft Computing in Humanities and Social Sciences, bringing together a wide array of authors and subject matters from different disciplines. Some of the contributors of the book belong to the scientific and technical areas of Soft Computing while others come from various fields in the humanities and social sciences such as Philosophy, History, Sociology or Economics. Rudolf Seising received a Ph.D. degree in philosophy of science and a postdoctoral lecture qualification (PD) in history of science from the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. He is an Adjoint Researcher at the European Centre for Soft Computing in Mieres (Asturias), Spain. Veronica Sanz earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University Complutense of Madrid (Spain). At the moment she is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Science, Technology and Society Center in the University of California at Berkeley. The two-volume set LNAI 9119 and LNAI 9120 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing, ICAISC 2015, held in Zakopane, Poland in June 2015. The 142 revised full papers presented in the volumes, were carefully reviewed and selected from 322 submissions. These proceedings present both traditional artificial intelligence methods and soft computing techniques. The goal is to bring together scientists representing both areas of research. The first volume covers topics as follows neural networks and their applications, fuzzy systems and their applications, evolutionary algorithms and their applications, classification and estimation, computer vision, image and speech analysis and the workshop: large-scale visual recognition and machine learning. The second volume has the focus on the following subjects: data mining, bioinformatics, biometrics and medical applications, concurrent and parallel processing, agent systems, robotics and control, artificial intelligence in modeling and simulation and various problems of artificial intelligence.
