K..Stripped of its conjecture and melodrama, Inimicus, is simply one mans testimony of his tribulations with the unseen forces of evil. Super powers that once conspired to conquer his soul in a vengeful and deliberate attempt to rob him of his God-given inheritance. Exposed within its pages, is the potentially fatal venom of an ancient enemy, and of the subsequent consequences when it is injected into a spiritually deprived and unsuspecting lifeKFortunately, there is another sideK It is also a journal filled with wondrous miracles. As a diary, it records, in chronological format, the extraordinary relationship between the human spirit and the Sovereign Power that gave it life. Eventually it culminates (or should I say begins again) with the miraculous intervention of an incredible and unequaled Love, mercifully reaching down from the heavens to rescue a tormented soul from the horrors of eternal damnationK.

Can we learn from history? A timely problem in the light of the recent dramatic developments in the Middle East and the immanent threat of international terrorism. The from time to time uneasy relations between the Christian West and the Islam originate in the seventh and eighth centuries and took shape in the Renaissance when for the first time in history knowledge of the "Turks" – a synonym of "Muslims" – was growing fast on the basis of first-hand experience, whether as agents of a western power, or as captives of the Turks. Apart from the unhappy but apparently universal tendency to represent one's enemy as the personification of evil, the fifteenth and early sixteenth western characterizations of the Ottomans as the sworn foe of Christianity are still pervading our concepts and terms, and are still formative for our own views. The Shadow of the Crescent is re-issued, because the book is concerned with the image of the "Turk" in the West after the fall of Constantinople till the beginnings of the Reformation and deals with the western attitude toward the Ottomans and the growing importance of the Islam. Certainly the problems were, and still are immense; not exactly the same, but undoubtedly comparable. At least we can learn from this book that there is nothing new under the sun.

"If, as Chesterton claimed, the devil's greatest triumph was convincing the modern world that he does not exist, Jeffrey Burton Russell means to rob him of his victory. Lucifer: The Devil in the Middle Ages is both a scholarly assessment of the development of diabology in the Middle Ages and an impassioned plea to the 20th century to recognize and acknowledge the existence of real, objective evil. The third in a series of works tracing the history of the devil from his Judeo-Christian roots, it represents a formidable undertaking: the devil's history is integrally related to the problem of evil, which is in turn at the heart of Western religious thought. Each of the volumes on Satan comprises, in essence, a judicious and able tour of Christian theology from the villain's point of view... Book jacket.

The collection of the elder Seneca assembles quotations from scores of declaimers over a period spanning sixty years, from the Augustan Age through the early decades of the empire. A view is offered onto a literary scene, for this critical period of Roman letters, that is numerously populated, highly interactive, and less dominated by just a few canonical authors. Despite this potential, modern readings have often lumped declaimers together en masse and organizational principles basic to Seneca’s collection remain overlooked. This volume attempts to ‘hear’ the individual speech of declaimers by focusing on two speakers—Arellius Fuscus, rhetor to Ovid, and Papirius Fabianus, teacher of the younger Seneca. A key organizing principle, informing both the collection and the practice of declamation, was the ‘shared locus’—a short passage, defined by verbal and argumentative ingredients, that gained currency among declaimers. Study of the operation of the shared locus carries several advantages: (1) we appreciate distinctions between declaimers; (2) we recognize shared passages as a medium of communication; and (3) the shared locus emerges as a community resource, explaining deep-seated connections between declamation and literary works.
