The Third International Symposium on Hultivariate Approximation Theory was held at the Oberwolfach!1athematical Research Insti tute, Black Forest, February 8-12, 1982. The preceding conferen ces on this topic were held in 1976* and 1979**. The conference brought together 50 mathematicians from 14 coun tries. These Proceedings form arecord of most of the papers pre sented at the Symposium. The topics treated cover different problems on multivariate approximation theory such as new results concerning approxima tion by polynomials in Sobolev spaces, biorthogonal systems and orthogonal series of functions in several variables, multivariate spline functions, group theoretic and functional analytic methods, positive linear operators, error estimates for approximation procedures and cubature formulae, Boolean methods in multivari ate interpolation and the numerical application of summation procedures. Special emphasis was posed on the application of multivariate approximation in various fields of science. One mathematician was sorely missed at the Symposium. Professor Arthur Sard who had actively taken part in the earlier conferen ces passed away in August of 1980. Since he was a friend of many of the participants, the editors wish to dedicate these Procee dings to the memory of this distinguished mathematician. Abrief appreciation of his life and mathematical work appears as well *"Constructive Theory of Functions of Several Variables". Edited by w. Schempp and Karl Zeller. Representing this diversity of the field, this book contains the proceedings of an international conference on category theory. The subjects covered here range from topology and geometry to logic and theoretical computer science, from homotopy to braids and conformal field theory. Although generally aimed at experts in the various fields represented, the book will also provide an excellent opportunity for nonexperts to get a feel for the diversity of current applications of category theory.

All the papers included in this volume are original research papers. They represent an important part of the work of French probabilists and colleagues with whom they are in close contact throughout the world. The main topics of the papers are martingale and Markov processes studies.

Mathematical Modelling of Industrial Processes

Mathematical Modelling of Industrial Processes

Publisher: Springer
Total Pages: 166
Release: 2006-12-08
Genre: Mathematics
ISBN: 3540472479

The 1990 CIME course on Mathematical Modelling of Industrial Processes set out to illustrate some advances in questions of industrial mathematics, i.e.of the applications of mathematics (with all its "academic" rigour) to real-life problems. The papers describe the genesis of the models and illustrate their relevant mathematical characteristics. Among the themesdealt with are: thermally controlled crystal growth, thermal behaviour of a high-pressure gas-discharge lamp, the sessile-drop problem, etching processes, the batch-coil- annealing process, inverse problems in classical dynamics, image representation and dynamical systems, scintillation in rear projections screens, identification of semiconductor properties, pattern recognition with neural networks. CONTENTS: H.K. Kuiken: Mathematical Modelling of Industrial Processes.- B. Forte: Inverse Problems in Mathematics for Industry.- S. Busenberg: Case Studies in Industrial Mathematics.
