During the second half of the 20th century, Murray Rosenblatt was one of the most celebrated and leading figures in probability and statistics. Among his many contributions, Rosenblatt conducted seminal work on density estimation, central limit theorems under strong mixing conditions, spectral domain methodology, long memory processes and Markov processes. He has published over 130 papers and 5 books, many as relevant today as when they first appeared decades ago. Murray Rosenblatt was one of the founding members of the Department of Mathematics at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and served as advisor to over twenty PhD students. He maintains a close association with UCSD in his role as Professor Emeritus. This volume is a celebration of Murray Rosenblatt's stellar research career that spans over six decades, and includes some of his most interesting and influential papers. Several leading experts provide commentary and reflections on various directions of Murray's research portfolio.

This volume contains 30 of David Brillinger's most influential papers. He is an eminent statistical scientist, having published broadly in time series and point process analysis, seismology, neurophysiology, and population biology. Each of these areas are well represented in the book. The volume has been divided into four parts, each with comments by one of Dr. Brillinger's former PhD students. His more theoretical papers have comments by Victor Panaretos from Switzerland. The area of time series has commentary by Pedro Morettin from Brazil. The biologically oriented papers are commented by Tore Schweder from Norway and Haiganoush Preisler from USA, while the point process papers have comments by Peter Guttorp from USA. In addition, the volume contains a Statistical Science interview with Dr. Brillinger, and his bibliography.

Contributions by David M. Ball, Ian Gordon, Andrew Loman, Andrea A. Lunsford, James Lyons, Ana Merino, Graham J. Murphy, Chris Murray, Adam Rosenblatt, Julia Round, Joe Sutliff Sanders, Stephen Weiner, and Paul Williams Starting in the mid-1980s, a talented set of comics artists changed the American comic book industry forever by introducing adult sensibilities and aesthetic considerations into popular genres such as superhero comics and the newspaper strip. Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986) and Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's Watchmen (1987) revolutionized the former genre in particular. During this same period, underground and alternative genres began to garner critical acclaim and media attention beyond comics-specific outlets, as best represented by Art Spiegelman's Maus. Publishers began to collect, bind, and market comics as “graphic novels,” and these appeared in mainstream bookstores and in magazine reviews. The Rise of the American Comics Artist: Creators and Contexts brings together new scholarship surveying the production, distribution, and reception of American comics from this pivotal decade to the present. The collection specifically explores the figure of the comics creator—either as writer, as artist, or as writer and artist—in contemporary US comics, using creators as focal points to evaluate changes to the industry, its aesthetics, and its critical reception. The book also includes essays on landmark creators such as Joe Sacco, Art Spiegelman, and Chris Ware, as well as insightful interviews with Jeff Smith (Bone), Jim Woodring (Frank) and Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics). As comics have reached new audiences, through different material and electronic forms, the public's broad perception of what comics are has changed. The Rise of the American Comics Artist surveys the ways in which the figure of the creator has been at the heart of these evolutions.

This thesis presents a new strategy that unites qualitative and quantitative mass data in form of text news and tick-by-tick asset prices to forecast the risk of upcoming volatility shocks. Holger Kömm embeds the proposed strategy in a monitoring system, using first, a sequence of competing estimators to compute the unobservable volatility; second, a new two-state Markov switching mixture model for autoregressive and zero-inflated time-series to identify structural breaks in a latent data generation process and third, a selection of competing pattern recognition algorithms to classify the potential information embedded in unexpected, but public observable text data in shock and nonshock information. The monitor is trained, tested, and evaluated on a two year survey on the prime standard assets listed in the indices DAX, MDAX, SDAX and TecDAX.

Professor Puri is one of the most versatile and prolific researchers in the world in mathematical statistics. His research areas include nonparametric statistics, order statistics, limit theory under mixing, time series, splines, tests of normality, generalized inverses of matrices and related topics, stochastic processes, statistics of directional data, random sets, and fuzzy sets and fuzzy measures. His fundamental contributions in developing new rank-based methods and precise evaluation of the standard procedures, asymptotic expansions of distributions of rank statistics, as well as large deviation results concerning them, span such areas as analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, multivariate analysis, and time series, to mention a few. His in-depth analysis has resulted in pioneering research contributions to prominent journals that have substantial impact on current research. This book together with the other two volumes (Volume 1: Nonparametric Methods in Statistics and Related Topics; Volume 3: Time Series, Fuzzy Analysis and Miscellaneous Topics), are a concerted effort to make his research works easily available to the research community. The sheer volume of the research output by him and his collaborators, coupled with the broad spectrum of the subject matters investigated, and the great number of outlets where the papers were published, attach special significance in making these works easily accessible. The papers selected for inclusion in this work have been classified into three volumes each consisting of several parts. All three volumes carry a final part consisting of the contents of the other two, as well as the complete list of Professor Puri'spublications.

Excerpt from Statistical Analysis of Stationary Time Series These schemes have been important in the development of methods for the statistical analysis of time series. They have been used with a varying degree of success to describe many types of phenomena encountered in applications. From the discussion in Chapter 1 it Will be apparent that by using these schemes, it is possible to approximate a large and important class of stationary processes, Viz. The so-called linear processes (see For this to be possible p must take large rather than small values and para meters involved in the scheme must be adjusted adequately. During the last ten years a good deal of work has been devoted to the construction of tests, estimates and confidence intervals appropriate for these schemes. We have described a few of the more important of these results in Chapter 3. In spite of the ingenuity and great theoretical interest of some of these methods, their practical applicability seems to be limited severely by the assumption that the process is a low (usually zero, first or second) order finite parameter scheme. After surveying a good deal of the applied literature devoted to statistical analysis of time series met with in practice, we have come to the following conclusion.
