America's often-unspoken morality codes make many topics taboo in "the land of the free." This book analyzes hundreds of popular culture examples to expose how the media both avoids and alludes to how we derive pleasure from our bodies. Flatulence ... male nudity ... abortion ... masturbation: these are just a few of the taboo topics in the United States. What do culturally enforced silences about certain subjects say about our societyand our latent fears? This work provides a broad yet detailed overview of popular culture's most avoided topics to explain why they remain off-limits and examines how they are presented in contemporary mediaor, in many cases, delicately explored using euphemism and innuendo. The author offers fascinating, in-depth analysis of the meaning behind these portrayals of a variety of both mundane and provocative taboos, and identifies how new television programs, films, and advertising campaigns intentionally violate longstanding cultural taboos to gain an edge in the marketplace.

People have dreamed of returning to their youth to correct their errors and naiveté. Dr. Frank Dodd acquired that chance but for a different reason. He and his wife, Dr. Beverly Dodd, are retired professors from a small north Florida College. They had just started enjoying retirement when they found Beverly had inoperable cancer and would soon die. Frank bemoaned the fact he hadn’t insisted on Beverly seeing a doctor a year earlier when she could have been cured. While in a chat room two fellow scientists heard Frank discuss his regrets at not getting his wife help in time and how he wished he could go back in time to court and marry her again, only this time get her to the doctors in time to be cured. The two scientists have been doing experiments in time travel and knowledge transfer between brains. Frank agreed to be used as a guinea pig to be sent back to the time of his youth and to implant his knowledge into himself as a boy. He arrives in 1941 with computers and other modern equipment to sell to the government and industry and invest the proceeds for the benefit of all three while living his life over, striving to have the same experiences and doing the same things from his former youth, but this time avoiding the mistakes of his former life. The dilemma occurs when he falls in love with a woman he meets in this new life. Should he remain single and wait for 15 years to meet and court his wife again or marry the one he falls in love with during his present time.

'He marvelled at their sense of balance, their beautiful dark skin, their erect bodies and their smiles''We must never forget how our women and children died in the British concentration camps''Are you aware that in 1913 all Asiatic people were classified as Undesirables?''Prue turned and kissed him. Her mouth soft and warm, saying, "e;Trams are romantic things, aren't they."e;In 1919, among indentured Indians, defeated Zulus and Boers still smarting from a Second Boer War defeat and the suppression of another rebellion in 1914, Donald Kirkwood, a Scottish ex-soldier, starts a remote Zululand cotton farm. With little knowledge of agriculture, he and his settler neighbours must cope with malaria, sleeping sickness, racial tensions and Spanish Flu. As the influences of Eugenics, Nationalism and Bolshevism seep into ex-colonial society he attends an unsettling seance in Durban and meets a pretty librarian. This first novel in the Kirkwood trilogy reflects with wit and accuracy the milieu of the years immediately after the First World War in Natal and the enchantment of falling in love.
