Arter Publications’ extended programme includes the launch of two new series which accompany the opening of the institution’s new building in Dolapdere: the first is entitled Arter Close-Up and offers a closer look into a selected work from its collection; which contains more than 1,300 works as of 2019. The Close-Up series starts its journey with Sarkis’s iconic work Çaylak Sokak - an artwork that is deemed to be one of the turning points in the history of contemporary art in Turkey. The artwork, which was first exhibited at the Maçka Art Gallery in 1986, and then took part in the Wizards of the Earth exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1989, bears the same name as the street in the Talimhane district of Istanbul where Sarkis was born and raised. It is displayed once more as part of the exhibition What Time Is It? opened at the Arter’s new building in Dolapdere. Authored by Emre Baykal, the chief curator of Arter, Çaylak Sokak offers not only a multilayered reading of Sarkis’ work in different contexts intertwined with political and cultural history but also provides a personal journey constructed around the work itself. The book, designed by Esen Karol, takes a journey into the artist’s personal history accompanied by photographs taken by Hadiye Cangökçe.

Arter initiates a new publication series, Arter Background, to accompany group exhibitions drawn from its collection, which holds more than 1,300 works of art as of 2019. This first book of the series accompanies one of the opening exhibitions of Arter’s new building, a collection-based group exhibition entitled What Time Is It?. Curated by Emre Baykal and Eda Berkmen, the exhibition is conceived around the concepts of memory, space and time. In the book, excerpts of texts selected around the ideas active in the curatorial process are complemented by new essays written specifically for this context, in line with Arter’s mission of encouraging artistic and cultural production. It thus features texts on themes associated with houses, everyday objects, personal and collective histories, inside and outside, urban rhythms, architecture, archaeology, borders and migration, and includes commissioned essays by Erdem Ceylan, Deniz Gül, Gökhan Kodalak, and Nil Sakman. While close-up visual excerpts taken from the art works are cited side by side with the texts, the installation views from the exhibition assume their places as the first entries into the memory of Arter’s new space. With contributions by Etel Adnan • Guillaume Apollinaire • Marc Augé • Ingeborg Bachmann • Matsuo Basho • Joe Brainard • Sevim Burak • Erdem Ceylan • Boubacar Boris Diop • Harun Farocki • Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht • Deniz Gül • Nurdan Gürbilek • Christopher F. This book takes readers on a journey through the multidimensional relationship between individuals and clothing. It delves into the disposal of garments and the transformative aspirations embedded within the fashion industry. Employing the unique research methodology known as "A/r/t/ography," which merges artistic practice, rigorous research, and educational development, this book unearths the dynamic interplay between upcycling and memory. The author unravels the intricate web of connections within upcycling through diverse practices, methods, and insightful interviews. By critically questioning established norms and scrutinizing the actions of fashion designers, the book makes significant contributions to existing literature. Additionally, it offers practical recommendations for sustainable fashion education, making it an indispensable resource for individuals involved in the textile and fashion field. Enhanced with visual aids such as images and illustrations, this book ensures an engaging reading experience that immerses readers in the research-based discourse.

Focusing on a single work from the Arter Collection in each title, Arter Close-Up Series offers an in-depth look at Canan Tolon’s work titled Loss (1988–2010), following Sarkis: Çaylak Sokak written by Emre Baykal and David Tudor & Composers Inside Electronics, Inc. (John Driscoll and Phil Edelstein): Rainforest V (variation 3) by Melih Fereli. The publication, which also draws on the display of the installation as part of the group exhibition Precaution (03/06/2021–20/02/2022) curated by Emre Baykal at Arter, features a comprehensive interpretive text written by Erdem Ceylan. In her installation Loss, Tolon gives another chance to her works that were damaged during the San Francisco Bay Area earthquake of 1989, suffered from shipping accidents due to improper packaging, or were affected by inadequate storage conditions which render them worthless in terms of their market and exhibition value. Adopting an experimental approach, Ceylan explores Tolon’s work in the form of an Ancient Greek tragedy by “damaging” and transforming the set of literary conventions peculiar to this form through a postmodern technique. Proceeding with the dialogues of two characters, Hephaistos and Daidalos, who were locked in Arter overnight because the closing time of the exhibitions had passed, but turned this state into an occasion to start a discussion on art and life, the book provides a context that can convey the love-hate relationship between the “artistic” ego seeking permanence and immortality and the alter ego which is at peace with life. The third book of the series, designed by Esen Karol, includes installation photographs by flufoto (Barış Aras and Elif Çakırlar), as well as close-up images that interpret the idea of loss with more detail.

The Ottoman Press (1908-1923) looks at Ottoman periodicals in the period after the Second Constitutional Revolution (1908) and the formation of the Turkish Republic (1923). It analyses the increased activity in the press following the revolution, legislation that was put in place to control the press, the financial aspects of running a publication, preventive censorship and the impact that the press could have on readers. There is also a chapter on the emergence and growth of the Ottoman press from 1831 until 1908, which helps readers to contextualize the post-revolution press.
