What is the most important book on sanctification? For John Murray, it was Walter Marshal’s The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification. William Cowper praised Marshall: “I think Marshall one of the best and most spiritual expositors of Scripture.” The Marrow men also commended Marshall. Even Andrew Murray believed Gospel Mystery to be “the one book . . . admitted by all to be the standard on sanctification.” Marshall’s enduring value is well established, yet scarcely any resources explain Marshall’s theology. T. Michael Christ’s A New Creation in Christ fills this void by exploring Marshall’s theology in the context of the antinomian and neonomian controversies of Marshall’s day. At a time when interlocutors where pushing one another to further extremes, Marshall achieves balance because he grounds sanctification in the believer’s union with Christ and deploys two limiting concepts that discourage using one error to refute the other. He insists both that some measure of assurance of salvation must precede actual works of holiness (refuting neonomianims) and that holiness is a necessary part of salvation (countering antinomianism). A New Creation in Christ explores how these limiting concepts translate into practical help for those who, as Marshall says, pursue holiness “under the guilt and power of indwelling sin.”

'The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification' by Walter Marshall, first published in 1692, is one of the classic works of Christian spirituality. It is a deep and rich biblical study of sanctification - how Christians grow in holiness and become more like Jesus. In a day when Christians are very prone to pursue self-help methods to grow in obedience to Christ, Walter Marshall lays out the biblical way of growth: obedience comes as Christians live by grace, in union with Christ, by faith. Growth comes, as Paul says in Galatians 2:20, through "Christ living in me." The message of this book is so important for Christians today, it is essential that it be rewritten in contemporary English.

The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification presents the culmination of Puritan thought on living the Christian life. Combining doctrinal precision and pastoral sensitivity, Walter Marshall shows how sanctification is essential to spiritual life, dependent on spiritual union with Jesus Christ, and inseparable though distinct from justification. He shows how holiness involves both the mind and the soul of the believer and that it is the aim of the Christian life. It is no wonder that this book has been reprinted many times throughout the years and received such high praise from leading ministers of the gospel. "The most important book on sanctification ever written." John Murray (1898 1975), professor of systematic theology, Westminster Theological Seminary

"That we may acceptably perform the duties of holiness and righteousness required by the law, our first work is to learn the powerful and effectual means by which we may attain to so great an end."Gospel Mystery is considered one of the best texts on the topic of sanctification. Though it was written many centuries ago by the obscure English Puritan Walter Marshall, this text still stands today as the most balanced and thoroughly Reformed treatment on this subject. This electronic edition features an active table of contents. The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification is part of The Fig Classic Series on Post-Reformation Theology.
