Frederick Douglass's daughter tells her own story of segregation and triumph. "Rosetta, Rosetta, Sit by me!" That's what the white girls at Miss Tracy's Female Seminary yell when Rosetta, Frederick Douglass's nine-year-old daughter, shows up on the first day of school. But things don't turn out the way she expects. Not only does she have to study in a classroom all by herself, but she's also kept apart at recess. Told in Rosetta's voice, and illustrated throughout, this remarkable chapter book includes a biographical endnote; a time line; reproductions of a letter from Rosetta to her father and Frederick Douglass's newspaper, the North Star; and source notes.

In 1798, the young French general, Napoleon Bonaparte, entered Egypt with an army and a brigade of 'savants', scientists, anthropologists and historians. His aim was not just conquest on the banks of the Nile but the rediscovery of the ancient world after years of obscurity under the Ottoman Empire. At the heart of this quest was a stone that was discovered in the small town of Rossetta which would offer the key to unlock the mysteries of the ancient Egyptian. It contained wording in Greek, Hieroglyphs and demotic Egyptian. It was the prize that Napoleon had dreamed of, but in a series of adventures the stone came into English hands. Discovery at Rosetta will be the first book that tells the full story of how the English won the battle to claim the Stone and how it was then shipped to England. The book also tells the story of the extraordinary characters involved leading up to the race to decipher the Stone's code between Thomas Young and Champollion.

Rainey was born during the great depression in a rural country in Arkansas. She was born of a sickly, prostitute mother, who lived with a grandmother on a small, hard scrabble piece of farmland. Their situation was so dire, with the mother knowing she had not long to live, and the grandmother too old to attempt to raise a child under such difficult circumstances, the mother reluctantly offers Rainey up for adoption. (This was not uncommon during the depression when children were shunted off to relatives or neighbors.) Given first to another farm family, which by today's standards would be considered dysfunctional, she runs away at the age of six. She eventually ends up with a group of women, mostly old-maid schoolteachers, who make some attempt to restore a degree of normalcy to the child's life. This is the nearest thing to a functional family she would ever know, but an unfortunate and ill-advised wartime marriage, once again, turns her on the wrong road of life. She goes through a series of misfortunes, including a jail term, before she eventually meets the love of her life. But once again, fate is cruel to her because he is married. She has an illegitimate child by him and, knowing he cannot marry her, leaves him with no forwarding address. She returns to the area of her childhood, where he, now single, eventually finds her, and in true romance fashion, they are brought together and supposedly live happily-ever-after.

This gorgeous and empowering picture book from award-winning author-illustrator Evan Turk paints the portrait of Marietta Barovier, the groundbreaking Renaissance artisan who helped shape the future of Venetian glassmaking. Marietta and her family lived on the island of Murano, near Venice, as all glassmakers did in the early Renaissance. Her father, Angelo Barovier, was a true maestro, a master of glass. Marietta longed to create gorgeous glass too, but glass was men’s work. One day her father showed her how to shape the scalding-hot material into a work of art, and Marietta was mesmerized. Her skills grew and grew. Marietta worked until she created her own unique glass bead: the rosetta. Small but precious, the beautiful beads grew popular around the world and became as valuable as gold. The young girl who was once told she could not create art was now the woman who would leave her mark on glasswork for centuries to come.
