'... a significant, wide-ranging study ... Above all, the book restores a salutary sense of the value of, and the difficult poise involved in, creative acts.' - Michael O'Neill, Durham University Taken together, these interlinked studies on topics such as the literary influences at work in the 1790s, Newman's resistance to Romantic ideas, the exact nature of Virginia Woolf's debt to Walter Pater and the counter-Romanticism of Lawrence and Eliot constitute a large reading of Romanticism from 1789 to our own day. They also throw light on the complex workings of influence itself, not least by showing how writers used images of fluency to describe their own creative processes.

This Companion examines a number of issues related to the terms realism and naturalism. The introduction seeks both to discuss the problems in the use of these two terms in relation to late nineteenth-century fiction and to describe the history of previous efforts to make the terms expressive of American writing of this period. The Companion includes ten essays which fall into four categories: essays on the historical context of realism and naturalism by Louis Budd and Richard Lehan; essays on critical approaches to the movements since the early 1970s by Michael Anesko, essays on the efforts to expand the canon of realism and naturalism by Elizabeth Ammons; and a full-scale discussion of ten major texts, from W. D. Howell's The Rise of Silas Lapham to Jack London's The Call of the Wild, by John W. Crowley, Tom Quirk, J. C. Levenson, Blanche Gelfant, Barbara Hochman, and Jacqueline Tavernier-Courbin.

Polyphony and the Modern asks one fundamental question: what does it mean to be modern in one’s own time? To answer that question, this volume focuses on polyphony as an index of modernity. In The Principle of Hope, Ernst Bloch showed that each moment in time is potentially fractured: people living in the same country can effectively live in different centuries – some making their alliances with the past and others betting on the future – but all of them, at least technically, enclosed in the temporal moment. But can a claim of modernity also mean something more ambitious? Can an artist, by accident or design, escape the limits of his or her own time, and somehow precociously embody the outlook of a subsequent age? This book sees polyphony as a bridge providing a terminology and a stylistic practice by which the period barrier between Medieval and Early Modern can be breached. One Woman’s Beautiful Legacy Unfolds in My Stephania. The new book tells a heartwarming tale about faith, love, hope, and legacy on January 20, 2025. Winston Lacaze is set to deliver his inaugural address as the new president of the United States. Only thirty-eight, he is the youngest to ever accomplish such a feat and he has God and Stephania to thank for it. Readers can follow an amazing legacy unfold in My Stephania, a novel by Johnnie Lee Moore Jr. Many people didn’t think that Winston Lacaze had a legitimate chance against his two formidable opponents. It was like David against two Goliaths. Nevertheless, he defied the odds and became the first independent candidate to be elected president of the United States. He reached out to every race, gender, religion, age, or creed. He reached out to the rich and poor. He was a man of honest integrity and faith. As he stood at the inaugural, he was overcome with emotion and gratitude when he thought of the beautiful Native American female named Stephania Frost. Every time thoughts of Stephania enveloped his mind, President Lacaze became overwhelmed with emotions. Her graceful beauty forever changed his life, and President Lacaze couldn’t thank her enough. Stephania had a warm and special place in his heart, and he couldn’t stop thinking about her. But Stephania was not his wife. Nor was she his mother. In fact, she wasn’t even related to him. Readers can find out more about this special woman and the wonderful legacy she left behind as her story unravels in My Stephania.
