Book Review: "I have had the pleasure of having this author as a guest on my show MY STEPS TO SOBRIETY and have read her book as part of doing due diligence prior to the interview. To give you context - I am an anaesthetist who has worked in Europe and Australasia and do now work in private practice in New Zealand. Reading Christina's book is quite an eye-opener for me into a culture that is so difficult to understand, it may as well come from another galaxy. This book shines the light on the often questionable, and at times fraudulent practices that go on behind the scenes of recruiting staff in the USA. More importantly however, it reveals the challenges that any American citizen will face when it comes to fighting for their rights or, God forbid, try to whistleblow ina society where financial ruin and homelessness is waiting just around the corner. This book is however also a testament to resilience. It offers the reader a way out of difficult situations due to the openness and transparency of the author. Christina had to go through hell and back, but she did not stop going. That is the hallmark of any survivor and I have taken solace in reading about Christina's trials and tribulations. I would have not chosen this book voluntarily but am ultimately very grateful that I had the chance to read it. An amazing author, a very interesting book!"-- Stephan Neff, My Steps to Sobriety

Life can hold rich possibilities even for those with a mental illness. Learning to live with a mood disorder is something people do gradually, as life unfolds. Bit by bit they begin to recognise the symptoms. Gradually they begin to manage their illness. Marja Bergen is one of those people. Over the 30 years that she has had manic depression, she has gradually adopted a lifestyle that makes it possible not only to cope, but to live a full and productive life. In 'Riding the Roller Coaster', she shares some very practical tips, including escaping the blues before they grab you, what to do when you don't feel like doing anything, and keeping life stable. But there are obstacles. There is a social stigma attached to mental illness. Marja Bergen believes that this stigma can be overcome. It is a matter of accepting mental illness as an illness like any other. It is a matter of attitude. The attitude of individuals with a mental illness -- toward themselves, toward their illness and toward their potential makes a great deal of difference. To become really well, a person must work hard to improve their own life. Taking control and making things happen is far better than waiting for something to happen, and Marja Bergen writes with warmth and eloquence about how to do exactly that.

The venerable Wonder Wheel, Coney Island's oldest and greatest attraction, has dominated the Coney Island skyline for more than a century. Towering over an ephemeral amusement zone long plagued by fires, floods, and ill-conceived urban renewal schemes, the magnificent steel machine has proved to be the ultimate survivor. The ride boasts impressive statistics. A combination of roller coaster and Ferris wheel, the 150-foot-tall structure weighs 200 tons, has 16 swinging cars and 8 stationary cars, and can carry 144 riders. More than 40 million passengers have taken a ride on the wheel since it was built in 1920, and during that time, it has maintained a perfect safety record. The ride is also a monument to immigrant initiative. Charles Hermann, the ride's designer, was Romanian; the original owner, Herman Garms, was German; and Denos Vourderis, who purchased and lovingly restored the aging landmark in 1983, was Greek. An official New York City landmark, the Wonder Wheel is now owned and operated by three generations of the Vourderis family as the centerpiece of their Deno's Wonder Wheel Park. The enduring saga of this iconic ride, and the family that saved it, provide a captivating chapter of Coney Island's history.

Fluctuations in commodity prices are an important driver of business cycles in small emerging market economies (EMEs). We document how these fluctuations correlate strongly with the business cycle in EMEs. We then embed a commodity sector into a multi-country EMEs’ business cycle model where exogenous fluctuations in commodity prices follow a common dynamic factor structure and coexist with other driving forces. The estimated model assigns to commodity shocks 42 percent of the variance in income, of which a considerable part is linked to the common factor. A further amplification mechanism is a ”spillover” effect from commodity prices to risk premia.
