Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Although many histories have been written and tradition has furnished its part toward the perpetuation of the memory of the exciting times of the civil war, very much occurred that has never been recorded. Monuments may be erected and histories written, but unless the veterans now living get busy and refresh their memories, and the memories of their comrades very much that happened, and ought to be preserved in durable form will with the passing of the main actors pass into oblivion. The Confederate Soldiers now living are all old men, and each one could, and ought to contribute items of information that would be interesting to the children and adults of future generations. These scenes, anecdotes, incidents and historical facts ought to be written by the soldiers themselves, for by no other means can a correct history of the war period be handed down to posterity. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of 1861-1865 Yielding to the suggestions of many companions and friends, who read my war reminiscences in The Buchanan News and Fincastle Herald, I have concluded to publish them in pamphlet form. They do not pretend to anything more than a personal illustration of what passed before the eyes of the writer, who bore an inconspicuous part in the bloody drama that was written on the pages of American history, 1861 to 1865. This second edition is published fifty-two years after the incidents herein mentioned occurred. In the past half century, the checkerboard of personal events in the writer's life is radiant with events of peril, pathos and pleasure, mingled with success and misfortune that has ebbed and flowed, rendering his life somewhat similar to Thackaray's "Story of Philip On His Way Through the World," who helped him, who kicked him, and who passed him by. If spared to reach my four-score years it is probable I will write and leave them as a legacy for the next generation. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 My War Reminiscences as originally written were not intended for publication. During all the years sub sequent to the close of the War I had been asked from time to time by my daughters, Lottie and Edith, to write down the stories I had told them of my war experiences; I had written from time to time in complying with their wishes, descriptions of many of the movements and battles, and as I progressed the work became interesting to myself, until it finally assumed the form of a complete story from the beginning to the end, and still it was my purpose that there should be but an edition of two vol umes, typewritten and bound, for my daughters only. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray: 1861-1865 I performed no special deeds of valor, but always tried to do my duty as a soldier. I missed the battle of Jonesville, being sick with typhoid fever. While I can't claim a discharge or parole, I would do the same again under similar circumstances, and would deem it no sin to violate an oath by taking up arms again. My father gave a Republican $200 to allow me to take the oath. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Recollections of a Cavalryman of the Civil War After Fifty Years: 1861-1865 Preface. Ears ago at one of the reunions of the Ninth Ohio Cavalry it was voted that I should write a 'history of our regiment. I was so occupied in business then that I could not find time to comply with their wishes. Now that I have had sufficient time I have carried out their request. With the help of some of my old comrades, I have undertaken to dig through the accumulated memories of fifty years and record incidents, many of them commonplace enough to us then, but to which time has added a charm which warms our hearts to each other and to this dear land of ours. Excerpt from Letters Written During the Civil War, 1861-1865 The Second Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was organized in April, 1861, immediately after the firing on Fort Sumter. Colonel George H. Gordon, Lieutenant-Colonel George L. Andrews and Major Wilder Dwight were the active spirits in creating the organization and in securing the acceptance of the regiment by the Secretary of War prior to the first call for troops by President Lincoln, May 4, 1861. The regiment was mustered into the military service of the United States in the month of May, 1861, at Camp Andrew, West Roxbury. It remained at this camp for drill and instruction about two months, and left Boston for the seat of War in Virginia, July 8, 1861. These letters, written to members of my family, record my experiences as an officer of this regiment during its term of service, from May, 1861, to July, 1865.
