Excerpt from Reminiscences and Sermons It is very difficult to write sermons that will please Christians and the world. In two respects the writer has attempted to cater to the taste Of the world. First. He has endeavored to clothe the divine, serious, life giving truths, in popular dress, for in this age, truth is not so well received unless presented in an interesting style. Excerpt from Sermons and Reminiscences N the year 1840, the undersigned became acquainted with the esteemed author of these Sermons and Reminiscences. We first met as classmates at the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, Lima, N. Y., and soon after entered into that more intimme rela tion of roommates. In this relation acquaintance early ripened into friendship, a friendship which deepened as the months came and went, and which has not lessened during the varied activities and the more numerous cares and responsibilities which have been crowded into the life of each. He was a young man of pleasing presence, pure speech, sweet spirit, tender sympathies, devout life, and true as steel. His student and church life, while at the Seminary, was an inspiration and a benediction to his associates and friends. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Seven Years of Early Life Smith has so quietly and modestly written down for his favored godson, was fully realized in all his after life. He retained his conscientious principles, and his energetic habits, to the last. He never failed in his duty towards others, especially in cases of emergency. Whatever became of himself, or of his own interests, he was far-sighted and vigilant in the discharge of trusts committed to his care. He fulfilled his engagements to his fellow-men, as faithfully as he endeavored to please God, and that is saying a great deal. Throughout a laborious career of more than seventy years, he exemplified strictly the apostle's language, not slothful in busi ness, fervent in spirit, serving the lord. The same diligence which he thought due to worldly affairs, he regarded as demanded by his distinctly Christian work. He was as prompt, and cheerful, and constant in the performance of his duties in the church and Sunday-school, as in the discharge of those belonging to his home and his counting house. He was always on the. Alert to promote. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Year's Sermons These sermons, in their present form, were never preached. Indeed, if one should speak with precision, they may scarcely be called ser mons. They were prepared weekly during a year for the editorial page of the Philadelphia Press. They are an attempt to speak to that large, and it is to be feared, growing class of men and women who are not hostile to religion, but who are out side the circle oi Christ's Disciples. Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences On the way from Agawam to Stratford We spent a night, and my mother and brother left me in bed while they Went to hear a sermon by Elder Knapp, the great revivalist. At the breakfast-table I heard them tell What happened at the meeting. That morning Elder Knapp had been in court on a charge of inciting a riot at histumultuous revival meetings. In his sermon that even ing he described the scene in court that morning, where he said, It looked as if all hell had boiled over and this was the scum of it. While he was speaking, some one in the gallery fired an air-gun, which broke a pulpit lamp on one side of the speaker. Excerpt from Reminiscences and Incidents of a Long Life This work is given to the public. At the earnest re quest of many of our most prominent ministers of the gospel, and a great multitude of lay members, amongst whomai have labored, either as pastor, or evangelist. Its preparation was commenced many years ago. A large portion of it was written Some time before Rev. Dr. J eter began the publication of his Recollections of a Long Life, in the Religious Herald, of Rich mond, Va. 50 that, although there may be some re semblance between his Recollections, and my Re miniscences, it must not be supposed that my book is a mere imitation of his. Its publication has been de layed to the present time, so that it might contain as nearly all of my life and labors as possible. I am now within a few weeks of seventy-nine years of age. I have been preaching the gospel fifty-nine years. And it is not likely that I will be able to perform much more public ministerial work. The incidents related in the book are mostly those that have fallen under my own observation. I trust they will be interesting and profitable to all who may read them. God has honored me greatly in my ministry and many thousands have been led to Jesus for salvation, through my humble in strumentality. To his adorable name be all the glory!
