It was a stunning strategic victory of World War II–and one of the most fantastic breaks for the Allies. On March 7, 1945, a small group of American infantrymen, engineers, and tank crews secured the Ludendorff Bridge that crossed the Rhine. The successful mission saved thousands of American lives and spearheaded the invasion of Nazi Germany. The Bridge at Remagen is the detailed narrative of this surprising but crucial military action, one that stunned the German army. It is also the moving story of men who did not consider themselves heroes, but who performed magnificently under fire. In this amazing true story, Ken Hechler gives you the hour-by-hour account of brilliant military daring, human courage, and almost incredible luck that profoundly changed the course of the war.

The gripping tale of the Battle of Remagen, where the Allies' dramatic capture of the last standing bridge over the Rhine in 1945 changed the course of World War II-illustrated with vivid artwork that brings the tension and triumph to life. In the aftermath of the Battle of the Bulge in February 1945, the Allies embarked upon the final assault of Germany. The long-delayed US thrust over the Roer River eventually took place in February, leaving the Rhine as the last major geographical barrier to the Allied advance into Germany. This book describes how the US Army, in the face of furious last-ditch German resistance, captured the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen – securing the last surviving major crossing over the Rhine and setting the stage for the defeat of the German Army in the West.

"This book ... is an attempt to describe the events leading up to the capture of the bridge and the fierce fighting that followed on the east bank of the Rhine, an aspect that has been overlooked in previous accounts"--Page 6.

This study is an historical analysis of the procedures and doctrine used by the III Corps Artillery during the First U.S. Army’s crossing of the Rhine River at Remagen, Germany. This study examines the actions of III Corps Artillery in the employment, organization for combat, and command and control of artillery units at Remagen. The fire support procedures employed by the field artillery are compared with those prescribed by published doctrine and unit standing operating procedures. This comparison is used to evaluate the adequacy of doctrine and the need for standing operating procedures to supplement the published doctrine. The development of standing operating procedures from lessons learned during earlier combat is examined to show how the doctrine allowed flexibility and standardization that was evident throughout the army. This standardization continues to serve as a model for fire support operations in today’s emerging combined arms doctrine. The study concludes with lessons learned: (1) Centralized command and control of field artillery should be under the headquarters that is best organized to control a large number or units, (2) doctrine and standing operating procedures are useless unless leaders develop and execute plans that are in accordance with the principles established and practiced, (3) the tendency to establish standing operating procedures that violate or contradict doctrine should be avoided, (4) a need for more liaison officers was evident at Remagen as well as through the war and continues to exist today even with improved technology, (5) the redundancy of tasks outlined in doctrine provides the flexibility needed to accomplish the fire support mission during a fast moving battle, and (6) field artillery units should practice several tactical missions and not just the standard mission associated with peace time organizations.

This volume presents both the radiologist's and the pathologist's approach to differential diagnosis of musculoskeletal tumors and tumor-like lesions and details the radiologic and histopathologic features helpful in confirming a diagnosis. The book is illustrated with over 1,200 radiographs, CT and MR images, full-color photomicrographs, and schematic drawings. Tables list important diagnostic features, and schematic drawings summarize both radiologic and pathologic differential diagnoses. This edition includes state-of-the-art information on PET, thin-section CT, 3-D CT, MRI, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular cytogenetics. The new co-author, Gernot Jundt, was instrumental in revising the WHO classification of musculoskeletal lesions. Illustrations have been updated, and improved captions begin with the diagnosis.
