Jacob's was built in 1807 in Upper Mahanoy Township. It took on the name of Howerter's because Adam Howerter collected the most money through donations for building the church. In 1874 it was called St. Jacob's by Henry Weiksel. A third church was built in 1893 and named St. James. The church burned in 1943 and was relocated to Pitman in Schuylkill County.
