The Health Transition Fund, a joint federal, provincial, & territorial effort to encourage & support evidence-based decision-making in health care reform, funded about 140 pilot projects and evaluation studies over 1997-2001 in nine theme areas. This report summarizes key learnings from 41 projects in the Fund's integrated service delivery (ISD) theme area. Introductory sections set the context for the projects (including a vision for ISD & ongoing ISD initiatives in Canada) and provide an overview of the Fund's ISD studies. The report then discusses significant & relevant findings of projects that examined clinical integration, information management & technology, and vertical integration in communities. Finally, implications of the findings for policy & practice are discussed. The appendix summarizes information on the Fund projects relevant to ISD.

Drawing on a broad range of approaches in the fields of sociology, anthropology, political science, history, philosophy, medicine and nursing, Power and the Psychiatric Apparatus exposes psychiatric practices that are mobilized along the continuum of repression, transformation and assistance. It critically examines taken for granted psychiatric practices both past and current, shedding light on the often political nature of psychiatry and reconceptualizing its central and sensitive issues through the radical theory of figures such as Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari, Goffman, and Szasz. As such, this ground-breaking collection embraces a broad understanding of psychiatric practices and engages the reader in a critical understanding of their effects, challenging the discipline’s altruistic rhetoric of therapy and problematizing the ways in which this is operationalized in practice. A comprehensive exploration of contested psychiatric practices in healthcare settings, this interdisciplinary volume brings together recent scholarship from the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and Australia, to provide a rich array of theoretical tools with which to engage with questions related to psychiatric power, discipline and control, while theorizing their workings in creative and imaginative ways.

This book presents respected experts, researchers, and clinicians providing the latest developments in social work knowledge and research. It discusses the latest in mental health research, information on violence, trauma and resilience, and social policies. Different mental health and social work approaches from around the world are examined in detail, including holistic, ethnopsychiatric, and interventions that place emphasis on recovery, empowerment, and social inclusion. This superb selection of presentations—taken from the 4th International Conference on Social Work in Health and Mental Health held in Quebec, Canada in 2004—comprehensively examines the theme of how social work can contribute to the development of a world that values compassion and solidarity. The volume offers a unique opportunity for practitioners, researchers, and others in the field to explore respected experts’ experiences and research which can spark further development of knowledge that can ultimately enrich humanity as a whole. This timely resource springs from the emerging tradition of the sharing of knowledge, an idea now deeply rooted in the international community of social workers in the areas of health and mental health. This book charts the ways in which psychoanalytic psychotherapy has been implemented, developed and researched within the public sectors of twelve different countries around the world. It discusses how psychoanalytic practitioners locally have responded to the challenge of evidence-based practice. For each country the authors describe: • How people can access talking therapies as part of the national healthcare system, including a brief history of how this system has developed and the place of psychoanalytic psychotherapy inside/outside of this system historically • How clinicians train and qualify as a psychoanalytic practitioner, and demographic profiles of their communities of psychoanalytic practice • How evidence-based practice has impacted the mental health system and, in particular, access to and provision of talking therapies e.g. through the development and implementation of treatment guidelines • How outcome monitoring and reporting of access, waiting times and recovery rates are used in the commissioning and provision of psychological therapies • What is needed to secure a viable future for psychoanalytic psychotherapy The first of two volumes, this book will be of great interest to all practicing psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists. The chapters in these volumes were originally published as special issues of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
