If you are familiar with the history of the Quakers, you know they were persecuted and tried for their beliefs and non-conformity. And if you are part of the Quakers, then you likely have direct relatives or ancestors who suffered these persecutions. Whichever you are, you will find the records in this book interesting. The Pennsylvania Quaker Records contains birth, deaths and marriage details of the earliest Quakers. You will also find records of early monthly minutes. To put it simply, as far as Pennsylvania Quaker records go, this is likely all the records you'll ever need. This book doesn't just contain much needed records of the early Quakers and their activities, it's also the perfect way to trace your genealogy. The names (including changed ones), dates and marriage records are detailed enough to help you trace your ancestors. There are 210,000 Quakers in the world today. This book holds records of the Forerunners.

This volume of photographs and text springs from the desire to identify and salvage the authentic character of our past as seen in our built environment. Centre County provides a unique mix of historic buildings and villages in a rural landscape setting that is a rich record of development in the area since the earliest days of settlement. Local buildings preserve traces of the changing economic activities--iron manufacturing and agriculture, travel and trade, and the growth of the Penn State University--and stories related to these buildings and the men who built them create a fascinating picture of life in the county for more than 150 years. Each area of the county contains examples of buildings that make up a complete picture of the evolution of local building types. Structures described in the detailed text and striking photographs include log houses and round barns, the Georgian and Victorian mansions of the iron masters and landowners, sturdy inns and mills, hotels, churches, farms, and buildings of Beaux-Arts classicism on the University campus. The book also provides a glossary of descriptive terms for historic buildings, defines styles and local building types, and gives information on the activities and agencies that support historic preservation.

The book consists of excerpts from interviews of senior members of State College Friends Meeting. The narrators who lived through the Great Depression tell of their difficult childhoodand yet in most cases one they regarded as happy. Some of the conscientious objectors during WWII tell of life in CPS camps; others speak of using nonviolent methods with mental patients, while still others relate the story of the human guinea experiments some of them participated in. Of those who did relief work after the war overseas, probably the most exciting tales are told by the four who worked with the Friends Ambulance Unit in China. They happened to be located close to where the Nationalists and the Communists were fighting.
