Divorce has long been viewed as a single phenomenon affecting two individuals without considering the framework conditions in which it occurs. Due to the increase of divorce rates in the past decades researchers have changed their perspective and have concentrated on the view of divorce as a personal experience that is greatly affected by the socials and economic environment. The aim of this thesis is to investigate divorce that has become a mass phenomenon in our present society. The assumption is that in order to understand the grounds for divorce and its consequences, we have to view divorce as a phenomenon that occurs at the intersection of personal, socio-economic and legal factors. Family disputes involve persons who have interdependent and continued relati- ships and arise in a context of distressing emotions. Separation and divorce affect all the members of the family, especially children. The study presents a comprehensive analysis of divorce as a psychological process that is situated within a social and a legal context. It presents a comprehensive view of divorce as a psychosocial, economic and legal phenomenon and contains a review of the research literature about divorce and its consequences for parents and children. Moreover, it describes divorce by proposing conceptual frames and explanatory models.

This book investigates the practice of family mediation and some of the challenges that may hinder its effective use by marginalised groups in a society. This book presents a sociological account on marital dissolution that engages and extends theorisations on individualisation and the contemporary organisation of personal relationships to discuss how the experience of divorce might not be all debilitating but on the contrary, could provide opportunities for productivity, self-responsibility and relationship formation. Using Singaporean divorcees’ narrative accounts, the book explores how divorcees shape and construct what the author refers to as, a divorce biography, to end their unsatisfying marriages, cope with the crisis, negotiate the associated risks, organise post-divorce personal communities and make future plans. It uncovers how divorcees navigate their divorce biographies within the economic, policy and social context they are located in and examines the conditions that facilitate or hinder the pursuit of productivity in different facets of their post-divorce lives. Medicine is changing at a speed never witnessed before in history. Reproductive technology personifies this concept perhaps better than any other field of medicine. The 1990s have seen an explosion in endoscopic and ambulatory procedures, the application of molecular biology to clinical conditions, and the refinement of assisted reproduction to allow third parties (donors and surrogates) into the process of family building. More than ever before, comprehensive medical care requires a team approach. However, the team comprises not only medical and scientific personnel, but also mental health professionals, lawyers, and ethicists. This integrated and multidisciplinary approach to medical care will become even more necessary as medical capabilities continue to develop faster than society can respond. This book reflects such an approach. It is based on a Harvard Postgraduate Course in June 1990 entitled Infertility in the 1990s: Technological Advances and Their Psychosocial Implications that was sponsored by the Faulkner Centre for Reproductive Medicine.
