Rational-emotive therapy was developed over a number of years from the work of Albert Ellis, who set up the Institute of Rational-Emotive Therapy in New York. Freud once humorously remarked that "Anyone who wants to make a living from the treatment of nervous patients must clearly be able to do something to help them".
