Monarchy was widespread as a political system in the ancient world. This 2007 volume offers a substantial discussion of ancient monarchies from the viewpoint of the ruler's court. The monarchies treated are Achaemenid and Sassanian Persia, the empire of Alexander, Rome under both the early and later Caesars, the Han rulers of China and Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty. A comparative approach is adopted to major aspects of ancient courts, including their organisation and physical setting, their role as a vehicle for display, and their place in monarchial structures of power and control. This approach is broadly inspired by work on courts in later periods of history, especially early-modern France. The case studies confirm that ancient monarchies created the conditions for the emergence of a court and court society. The culturally specific conditions in which these monarchies functioned meant variety in the character of the ruler's court from one society to another.

This study examines academic departments as a context for teaching in the secondary school. lt explores why teachers find departments to be crucial to the high school setting. In all three schools studied and in all four subjects English, Maths, Science and Social Science teachers - even those who felt isolated in their classrooms - located their sense of professional identity, practice and community in their departments. Departments are seen as boundaries for dividing the school; centres of social interaction; a micro political decision-making forum; as a subject knowledge category. Those concerns are important at this time as various attacks are being made on school structures and subject and administration fragmentation - in these cases subjects are seen as obstacles to change. To subject groups they are viewed as potential vehicles to carry and confirm the message.

Subject departments are the high school's primary organizational unit, defining who teachers are, what they do, where and with whom they work, and how that work is perceived by others. Subject organization is a feature so prominent that most educators take it for granted. Yet in all the varied discourse about schools and schooling, few have penetrated the accepted stereotypes. Until now. Contributors: W. Richard Scott, Randi C. Cohen, Joan E. Talbert, Stephen J. Ball, Colin Lacey, Don Hill, Andy Hargreaves, and Robert Macmillan.

Excerpt from What Can a Mother Do to Preserve Her Children's Teeth? The question which serves as a title to this httle book is one that almost every mother asks when she takes her suffering child to the dentist to get relief from the first experience of the pain which Burns describes as the - "venomed stang That shoots my tortured gums alang: And through my lugs gi es mony a twang Wi' gnawing vengeance." And there are so many erroneous ideas, with so little real knowledge of what a mother can and should do for her childrens teeth, that it has seemed to me a want would be supplied if some trustworthy information were put together in a popular form to explain a few of the causes of tooth deterioration, and the means by which the evil can be arrested. My experience as a dental practitioner teaches me that if parents do not take the trouble to look after their children's teeth intelligently and carefully, the dentist may as well cease his endeavours to preserve these organs, and go back to his old position of tooth-drawer, which is still the only idea conveyed to many minds by the word dentist.
