For a closer look go to: talk-or-walk.com Here is your co-teacher for pronunciation. We made the book, you make the copies. This book is for ESL students, from middle school to adult. Virtually all non-native speakers have trouble with certain sounds of English, primarily because they do not have those sounds in their native language. The three major problem areas are: light-right-white-night; beet-bat-bet-bit; and bat-pat-fat-vat. WHAT IS IT? 16 Battleship-type, communicative pair activities for the 16 most common ESL textbook topics. Thus, you can have a pronunciation focus with whatever unit or topic you are covering. These COORDINATE WORDS (usually about 20) feature the most difficult sounds for ESL students to distinguish and pronounce, such as: light-right; ship-sheep; pat-fat, pool-pull, gin-chin. The ANSWER WORDS (usually about 22) are vocabulary from the ESL topic, for example, FOOD: appetizer, bland, brunch, buffet, crispy, dessert, leftovers, sweet tooth, vegetarian. The similar sounding coordinate words create confusion. Clearing up that confusion improves both listening and pronouncing. It's also fun, challenging, related to the topic, and contains topic vocabulary. This book can be used every week for systematic improvement, or as a supplemental activity when time allows or when your textbook is particularly lacking.
