This volume presents six alternative approaches to studying second language acquisition – 'alternative' in the sense that they contrast with and/or complement the cognitivism pervading the field. A fundamental issue in second language acquisition research and in applied linguistics is the question of how learners acquire a second language. There is ample evidence that language users, including second-language (L2) users, can predict upcoming information during listening and reading. Processability Theory (PT) as developed by Manfred Pienemann is a prominent theory of second language acquisition.
