This volume is a collection of the unclassified papers presented at the Third Symposium on the Plasma Sheath-Plasma Electromagnetics of Hypersonic Flight. This symposium consisted of the review of progress in reentry communication studies during the three year period since the prior meeting. The program of this symposium on plasma electromagnetics of hypersonic flight involves a wide range of scientific disciplines, including electromagnetics, aerodynamics, aero-thermochemistry, plasma dynamics, electronics, and high- temperature phenomena. The papers were selected to explore as many of these facets of research, including the results of laboratory, flight, and system tests, as time permitted.

This bibliography lists all in-house reports, journal articles, and contractor reports issued from 1 July 1966 to 30 September 1967. Part I lists all in-house reports by the series in which they were issued; Part II lists all in-house reports, journal articles, and contractor reports by the Laboratory responsible for their preparation. In Part I, the reports are listed numerically by series; in Part II, in-house reports and journal articles are listed alphabetically by author, and contractor reports are listed numerically by the AFCRL report number.

Nonlinear Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Plasmas

Nonlinear Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Plasmas

A review is presented of the current literature pertaining to high power rf field-plasma interactions. In the survey, the class of nonlinear interactions is restricted to the case where the effective dielectric constant of the plasma is a function of the local electric field intensity. Since the propagation characteristics of an em wave depend upon the effective dielectric constant, the presence of an intense rf field can modify the propagation characteristics of an em wave. The assumptions and basic theoretical approach of each author are discussed and the most significant results are summarized. The approaches used by different authors are compared. A critique is made of the various appraches and their advantages and limitations are pointed out. (Author).
