In modern, information-centric business environments, Decision Making Support Systems (DMSS) present a critical consideration for any organization serious about maintaining competitive advantage. Advances in information systems, knowledge management technologies, and other decision support systems necessitate a critical understanding of the latest trends and research. Engineering Effective Decision Support Technologies: New Models and Applications presents a collection of the latest research in DMSS and applies those theoretical considerations to best practices in the field. This reference includes empirical case studies and an analysis of new models and perspectives in knowledge management, promoting discussion of DMSS strategies among managers, researchers, and students of information science.

The two volume set LNAI 3641 and LNAI 3642 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Rough Sets, Fuzzy Sets, Data Mining, and Granular Computing, RSFDGrC 2005, held in Regina, Canada in August/September 2005. The 119 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 277 submissions. They comprise the two volumes together with 6 invited papers, 22 approved workshop papers, and 5 special section papers that all were carefully selected and thoroughly revised. The first volume includes 75 contributions related to rough set approximations, rough-algebraic foundations, feature selection and reduction, reasoning in information systems, rough-probabilistic approaches, rough-fuzzy hybridization, fuzzy methods in data analysis, evolutionary computing, machine learning, approximate and uncertain reasoning, probabilistic network models, spatial and temporal reasoning, non-standard logics, and granular computing. The second volume contains 77 contributions and deals with rough set software, data mining, hybrid and hierarchical methods, information retrieval, image recognition and processing, multimedia applications, medical applications, web content analysis, business and industrial applications, the approved workshop papers and the papers accepted for a special session on intelligent and sapient systems.

In the past three decades, local search has grown from a simple heuristic idea into a mature field of research in combinatorial optimization that is attracting ever-increasing attention. Local search is still the method of choice for NP-hard problems as it provides a robust approach for obtaining high-quality solutions to problems of a realistic size in reasonable time. Local Search in Combinatorial Optimization covers local search and its variants from both a theoretical and practical point of view, each topic discussed by a leading authority. This book is an important reference and invaluable source of inspiration for students and researchers in discrete mathematics, computer science, operations research, industrial engineering, and management science. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Mihalis Yannakakis, Craig A. Tovey, Jan H. M. Korst, Peter J. M. van Laarhoven, Alain Hertz, Eric Taillard, Dominique de Werra, Heinz Mühlenbein, Carsten Peterson, Bo Söderberg, David S. Johnson, Lyle A. McGeoch, Michel Gendreau, Gilbert Laporte, Jean-Yves Potvin, Gerard A. P. Kindervater, Martin W. P. Savelsbergh, Edward J. Anderson, Celia A. Glass, Chris N. Potts, C. L. Liu, Peichen Pan, Iiro Honkala, and Patric R. J. Östergård.

Change is one of the most significant parameters in our society. Designers are amongst the primary change agents for any society. As a consequence design is an important research topic in engineering and architecture and related disciplines, since design is not only a means of change but is also one of the keystones to economic competitiveness and the fundamental precursor to manufacturing. The development of computational models founded on the artificial intelligence paradigm has provided an impetus for much of current design research -both computational and cognitive. These forms of design research have only been carried out in the last decade or so and in the temporal sense they are still immature. Notwithstanding this immaturity, noticeable advances have been made both in extending our understanding of design and in developing tools based on that understanding. Whilst many researchers in the field of artificial intelligence in design utilise ideas about how humans design as one source of concepts there is normally no attempt to model human designers. Rather the results of the research presented in this volume demonstrate approaches to increasing our understanding of design as a process.
