Deteriorating water quality in Europe led to the introduction of the EU Water Framework Directive, one of the most comprehensive EU directives formulated to date. The Directive replaces the previous fragmentary collection of directives and management strategies for water and facilitates integrated policy. An overarching perspective on Europe's water resources will lead the way to the ultimate goal: to create and maintain good water status and sustainable water use. The countries of Europe have been divided into water districts, each managed by a separate water authority.
