Excerpt from Selected Readings in Rural EconomicsThe study of rural economics is cultural because it has to do with men in the broadest possible sense. Men have lived with out printing presses or printed books and even without books of any kind. The qualities which characterize our race were fixed before there was art or architecture. Very few, if any, changes or improvements in the race have taken place since, but, except for the lowest savage who lived exclusively by hunting and fish ing, no people has ever lived without agriculture, that is, without some means of increasing the soil's capacity to produce desirable things for human consumption. I remember reading a fascinating icle a few years ago on the oldest trade in the world. By was meant a specialized occupation which would exclude re. The oldest trade, or specialized occupation, accord that article, was working in flint. This was fascinating e it introduced one to a very important chapter in the life human race. That is cultural information which gives one ible knowledge of and sympathy with man in all his existence and all stages of his civilization. But even making of flint instruments is less valuable in this respect than knowledge of the various processes by means of which man as extracted a living from the soil. This is practical knowledge in a strict business sense, because wide knowledge of rural economy, of the epochs in agricultural istory, of the changes that have taken place, of the reasons why taken place, of the tendencies of the present, and of the.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Agricultural Economics This book is intended for the student and the farmer inter ested in the study of those economic principles which underlie the effective organization of the farm, and for the statesman interested in establishing laws and institutions for the develop ment of agriculture. The subjects treated correspond to those studies grouped under the head of Farm Management in some colleges and under the head of Agricultural Economics in others. From the author's point of view these two terms as used at the present time cover essentially the same subject matter so far as they relate to the economics of production on the indi vidual farm, but he believes that the latter term is much the broader, including also the problems of marketing, land eco nomics, farm finance, and farm life. The matter here presented is the result of a gradual develop ment of twenty years of study in this field. Its publication marks the close of seventeen years of teaching of agricultural economics by the author in the University of Wisconsin, where he first gave a course to the short-course students in the winter of 1902 - 1903, at which time a Syllabus of Lectures on Agricul tural Economics was printed for the use of his class. In 1905 An Introduction to the Study of Agricultural Economics, containing thirteen chapters, was published, the main points of which have been included in the present volume. For many years, parts of the present volume have been mimeographed and used in the classroom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Complete Farmer and Rural Economist: Containing a Compendious Epitome of the Most Important Branches of Agricultural and Rural Economy IN the following pages, the object of the writer is to give brief, but it is hoped perspicuous and practical sketches of some important improvements in modern husbandry. In attempting to carry this design into effect, it has been his intention to insert no matter which is merely conjectural or Speculative; to give place to nothing not worth the atten tion of the person whose livelihood depends on his pursuits as a cultivator; and who has neither time nor money to de vote to such books as are expensive, voluminous, and foreign or remotely related to available improvements in husbandry.
