Excerpt from Present Law and Proposals Relating to Increasing Domestic Energy Production and Reserves: Scheduled for a Hearing Before the Subcommittee on Energy and Agricultural Taxation of the Committee on Finance on July 27, 1990 Blends of ethanol (from renewable sources) and gasoline (gaso hol) are exempt from a portion of the Federal motor fuels excise tax. This provision was first contained in the Energy Tax Act Of 1978 and the exemption was increased in the Deficit Reduction Act of 1984 to 6 cents of the 9 cents per gallon Federal motor fuels excise tax. In addition, the Crude Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act of 1980 provided a credit Of 40 cents per gallon for renewably derived ethanol used to produce a mixture Of ethanol and gasoline.
