This research book presents the fundamental work related to the prediction of collapse load for a moment-resisting steel frame (MRSF) subjected to earthquake forces. It demonstrates the extensive work in nonlinear analysis with particular reference to pushover analysis (POA) and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA), and deliberates at length the historical background for each method. More importantly, the book simplifies the collapse prediction process of a structure based on analytical expression. In addition, this book describes the MRSF which was designed according to Eurocode(s). This bookserves as a guide and reference for practitioners and students. Rehabilitation of Metallic Structural Systems Using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites, Second Edition provides comprehensive knowledge on the application of FRPs in various types of metallic field structures. Part I provides an overview of the various types of materials and systems and discusses the durability of bonds. Part II focuses on materials-level considerations, such as corrosion and mechanical behavior, putty effects on the effectiveness of pipeline systems, laser joining and the use of carbon and basalt FRP for underwater repair. Building on Part II, the final three sections focus on applications of FRP composites to steel components and various infrastructure systems. This book will be a standard reference for civil engineers, designers, materials scientists, and other professionals who are involved in the rehabilitation of metallic structures using fiber reinforced polymer composites. - Contains eighteen new chapters covering materials-level aspects and applications - Presents materials developments for tailored bonds, durability, and bond behavior - Includes methods of analysis, testing, and implementation across a broad range of sectors - Covers design aspects, guidelines, and codes - Discusses economic aspects and future prospects

This book provides an overview on the major findings of a questionnaire survey of academic profession in international perspective. More than 25,000 professors and junior staff at universities and other institutions of higher education at almost 20 countries from all over the world provide information on their working situation, their views and activities. The study “The Changing Academic Profession” is the second major study of its kind, and changes of views and activities are presented through a comparison of the findings with those of the earlier study undertaken in the early 1990s. Major themes are the academics’ perception of their societal and institutional environments, the views on the major tasks of teaching, research and services, their professional preferences and actual activities, their career, their perceived influence and their overall job satisfaction. Emphasis is placed on the influence of recent changes in higher education: the internationalisation and globalisation, the increasing expectation to provide evidence of the relevance of academic work, and finally the growing power of management at higher education institutions. Overall, the academics surveyed show that worldwide discourses and trends in higher education put their mark on the academic profession, but differences by country continue to be noteworthy. Academics consider themselves to be more strongly exposed to mechanism of regulations, incentives and sanctions as well as various assessments than in the past; yet their own freedom, and responsibilities and influence shape their identity more strongly and are reflected in widespread professional satisfaction.

Throughout history, societies have had to decide whom to 'sacrifice' and whom to help in times of disaster. This volume examines how elite groups attempt to maintain power through the use of particular economic, political, and ideological instruments and how both ruling elites and common people endeavor to create meaningful traditions while enduring hardship. The Political Economy of Hazards and Disasters demonstrates how vulnerability is economically constructed, primary producers adapt their production regimes, how traders and merchants adapt their practices, and how political economic objectives play out in recovery efforts.
