Excerpt from Practical Optics for the Laboratory and Workshop This little book has been written primarily as a course of instruction for the student in Practical Optics; and secondly, to deal with the more recent practical applications of Optics for use in the optician's workshop. The exercises contained in the book are compiled from a series of experiments through which students in the Optical Engineering Department of the Imperial College of Science (South Kensington) usually pass before proceeding to the more advanced optical work of the department. It commences with the quite elementary work and covers a considerable amount of ground, and should, I think, prove a useful laboratory course in Light for Colleges and Schools of Science. The experiments involve as little expensive apparatus as possible, but at the present day satisfactory experimental optics demands somewhat better apparatus than the rather old-time favoured piece of wood and card, and therefore it has been partly the aim in these pages to suggest means of producing such apparatus in the best possible way. Although some of the devices mentioned are not yet to be found on the market, I have given scale drawings of such things (as, for example, optical benches), all of which have been found thoroughly practical, so that those who have a small workshop available may construct necessary apparatus for themselves. Opticianry is a large and growing ophthalmic specialty. This practical resource provides readers with a basic working knowledge of optics and office procedures. Offering a solid foundation of "need to know" information within about 4 weeks, this handbook is an ideal, basic reference for the non-optician receiving on-the-job training. Essential information is presented in a clear and easily digested format. A trainer schedule/checklist provides consistency in training. Coverage of optics provides readers with the basic knowledge they need. Assessments are included at the end of each section to help assess the level of knowledge. Answers are included at the end of the book. Each level begins with objectives and a list of tasks to master, so readers know exactly what is expected of them prior to beginning each section. Up to date references and suggested readings refer the reader to additional titles for more in-depth coverage. Basic line drawings of anatomy and spectacle lenses enhance reader understanding and comprehension of each topic presented.

A complete optical systems design course for general optical engineers! Practical optical system layout. The ``first cut'' design of an optical system--anything from a telescope to a complicated VR helmet--is usually not done by a specialist but by a more general optical engineer. This book, drawn from the author's extensive seminar experience, details such basic design techniques in a clear, concise, ``low-math'' way that is sure to be readily accessible to anyone with a working knowledge of optics. It discusses the characteristics of a wide range of optical components, how to determine the type of components to be used, and how to arrange these components so that the system measures up to its performance objectives. Practical, step-by-step coverage includes succinct equations, simple diagrams, and clear explanations. For less experienced designers, the chapter on utilizing stock lenses (to test a concept or to prove out a possible finished device) should be especially useful.
