To every Gnome in Rome...and elsewhere. It has been said, that in order to master anything, to hone one's talents, whatever they may be, a person must first endure a gauntlet of suffering, including being pummeled by insults and derision from friends and family. This book is the culmination of suffering years of adversity from spouse, siblings, children, workplace peers, and even sometimes, my own self-condemnation. The title; "Pomes for Gnomes" comes from my love for fairy tales. The term "pome" actually has two definitions. One is a fruit with its seeds in the middle, such as an apple, and the other is a poetic form of "poem." My apologies to apples, I have chosen the latter. I have always been an avid reader and as a young boy I discovered the world of imagination in poetic literature. There is no limit to human imagination, and my favorite literature has always been science fiction, fairy tales, and fantasy. I grew up reading comic books and fairy tales, letting my imagination take me on a trip with the make-believe characters. When you read a story, you become the hero and you own the adventure, and when the story is a fantasy, you become a superhero. Someone once said that dreams are necessary to life, and I firmly believe that. In that regard, a fiction writer could be called a dream maker. This book is an expression of some of my dreams. Some of my "pomes" are an escape from reality, some may be a personification of it, and some are nonsensical. I hope you find them mostly humorous and entertaining. ---Ron Richie.

This is the first longer-format, middle-grade collection from #1 New York Times-bestselling author-illustrator Calef Brown. Moving away from the picture book format offers Calef the opportunity to tackle a variety of themes and poetry styles as well as reach a slightly older audience. Hypnotize a Tiger is chock-full of Calef's zany black-and-white artwork and features his wonderfully inventive characters and worlds-from the "completely nonviolent and silent" Lou Gnome to Percival, the impetuous (and none-too-sensible) lad who believes he is invincible, to Hugh Jarm (who has a huge arm, natch!). It's a whimsical world: creative, fun, and inspiring!

Gnome's Gnotebook is a work of contemporary poetry reflecting thirty years of observing life. Poetry is art and all poems included within Gnome's Gnotebook are literary paintings translating the visual natural world into mental images, which are then re-interpreted by each person in light of his or her own life experiences. By sharing and re-interpreting these experiences through the art of poetry, we come to understand the very uniqueness of who we are in the created world and hopefully, to appreciate the dignity of our common humanity.

According to the preface to Don Welch’s latest collection of poems, “Gnomes” are defined as: n. short expressions, from a word meaningjudgment, opinion, purpose; of, or pertaining to, someone originally Greek, especially a poet. n. a species of diminutive beings, usually shriveled old men who troll interiors, guarding earth’s treasures. This is an apt description of Welch’s book, indeed. The senior poet of Nebraska and the Great Plains, Don Welch may sardonically regard himself as the “shriveled old man” who both explores the Plains’ interiors and, by writing about them, becomes the protector of the earth’s treasures. Thegnomesin this collection are beautiful little crystals of verse, reminiscent of the brevity of ancient Chinese poetry but purposefully armed with the occidental twists of language and experience that only someone immersed and baptized in the spirit of the local can wield. Welch’s poems are vertical moments for our busy horizontal lives. They are like pendants of beaded water, their careful silences speaking loudly through our din.
