Kingfishers are a stunning sight to behold. The dash and verve of these cosmopolitan birds has been admired for millennia, appearing in creation myths, imperial regalia, and cultural iconography, and they were once valued as highly as gold. Artists used their iridescent feathers in Tian-tsui, an iconic style of Chinese fine art, for more than 2,400 years. The magnificent temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia owe their existence in part to the great wealth generated by the live kingfisher trade from the Indochina Peninsula. As well, as a muse, kingfishers have influenced philosophers, playwrights, and artists, from the Roman poet Ovid to Carl Jung, Charles Darwin, and others, while more recently, bio-mimicry engineers have turned to kingfishers for inspiration. This lavishly illustrated book delves into the origins and diversity of the more than 120 species of kingfishers, from the burly kookaburras to the diminutive birds that daringly pluck spiders off webs, defining their characteristics, their differences, their lifestyles, and their cultural significance around the world.

China is one of the largest countries in the world, covering 7% of the earth's land surface, and encompassing a hugely diverse range of habitats. As a result it boasts a rich and diverse avifauna, including some of the most spectacular and fascinating birds to be found anywhere in the world. This is the first truly comprehensive, taxonomically modern, and fully illustrated field guide to the Chinese birds. Over 1300 species are illustrated in 128 colour paintings, and fully described in the text. Colour distribution maps are provided for all illustrated species. The authors have both lived and worked in the region for many years, and have extensive experience of writing and illustrating bird guides. This important book will be a landmark in field guide publishing.

Welcome to "Urban Wings: A Photographic Journey of City Birds." As a bird photographer, Mukund has had the unique privilege of capturing the intricate beauty and essence of avian life in and around the wetlands of urban landscapes. This book aims to showcase the diversity and allure of birds that enrich our cities, captivating viewers with their presence and resilience. Amidst the concrete jungles and the cacophony of human activity, these feathered inhabitants often go unnoticed, blending seamlessly into the background. However, a closer look by Mukund reveals a fascinating array of species that have adapted and thrived within our metropolitan settings and adjoining wetlands. As urban sprawl encroaches upon green spaces, Mukund believes it becomes increasingly vital to acknowledge and celebrate our urban avian neighbors. Through the pages of this book, Mukund invites readers to embark on a visual adventure, unveiling the secret lives of these city and wetland-dwelling birds. From majestic raptors soaring above skyscrapers to delicate songbirds serenading in urban wetlands and city parks, each photograph within these pages tells its own unique story of survival and adaptation.

Cooperative breeders are species in which more than a pair of individuals assist in the production of young. Cooperative breeding is found in only a few hundred bird species world-wide, and understanding this often strikingly altruistic behaviour has remained an important challenge in behavioural ecology for over 30 years. This book highlights the theoretical, empirical and technical advances that have taken place in the field of cooperative breeding research since the publication of the seminal work Cooperative Breeding in Birds: Long-term Studies of Behavior and Ecology (1990, HB ISBN 0521 372984, PB ISBN 0521 378907). Organized conceptually, special attention is given to ways in which cooperative breeders have proved fertile subjects for testing modern advances to classic evolutionary problems including those of sexual selection, sex-ratio manipulation, life-history evolution, partitioning of reproduction and incest avoidance. It will be of interest to both students and researchers interested in behaviour and ecology.
