"Pablo Picasso is the artistic giant of the twentieth century, and perhaps only Leonardo da Vinci rivals his fame throughout the history of art. In working life that spanned nearly eighty years, Picasso painted some of the archetypal images of modern art, including Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and Guernica. But he did more that create individual works of originality and genius. Picasso invented, and inspired others to invent, a whole new vocabulary and way of thinking about art which have shaped the progress of modernism throughout the twentieth century. Picasso's fame is indisputable but rests largely on his oil paintings. A lesser-known but crucially important part of Picasso's oeuvre is his graphic work, in particular his poster designs. From the 1940s to the 1960s Picasso produced hundreds of designs for posters, many advertising exhibitions of his work. They are interesting and important not only for their striking simplicity and bold color, but also because they sum up many of the expressionist ideas he had developed from Guernica onword. Themes and images from his paintings and ceramics such as bulls and goats, faces and the dove of peace recur and give remarkable coherence to this body of work. Picasso Posters presents a comprehensive panorama of Picasso's poster art. An illustrated introduction tells the story of Picasso's long life and career, and sets his poster work in the context of the genre's history and of his paintings, drawings, and sculpture. Sixty of Picasso's finest posters are reproduced in large-scale color plates, making Picasso Posters a sumptuous., informative, and much-needed study of this little-known aspect of the master's work."--Publisher's description

How a German art dealer ensured the museum acquisition and dissemination of Picasso's prints in the postwar years How does any given body of work wind up in major collections, museums and exhibitions? Very often, it is because of the unsung efforts of individuals who advocate for the work in the face of conservatism and criticism. In Picasso's case, this role in Germany fell to the Bremen art dealer Michael Hertz. It was Hertz's commitment in the postwar period that resulted in the widespread acquisition of the artist by museums after World War II. In particular, Hertz's work on behalf of Picasso greatly benefited Kunsthalle Bremen, which has one of the most extensive collections of the artist's prints. The Picasso Connectionbrings together outstanding printworks by Picasso, ranging from lithographs and linocuts to book illustrations. Picasso's print oeuvre, as represented here, exemplifies the triumph of the affordable medium in postwar Germany, as well as Hertz's strong commitment.

Picasso Black and White: Examines the artist's lifelong exploration of a black-and-white leitmotif through paintings and a selection of sculptures and works on paper. Picasso continued the tradition of engaging the color black that had been employed throughout a centuries-long history of Spanish painting by fellow artists José de Ribera, Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Zurbarán, and Francisco de Goya. Moreover, he made highly effective use of isolated black, white, and gray hues in a nod to monochromatic grisaille painting and to drawing, line, and form. As this volume attests, the recurrent motif of black and white appears throughout Picasso's oeuvre, including his blue and rose periods, his investigations into Cubism and Surrealism, his interpretations of historical subject studies for his celebrated painting 'Guernica', World War II, and an homage to old masters, as well as the powerful paintings of his last years. Featuring reproductions of more than 150 works, this book examines the extraordinary complexity and power of these expressive artworks, which purge color in order to highlight their formal structure. Including essays by leading Picasso scholars, this book is a unique and coherent perspective on one of the world's most innovative and influential artists.

The catalog to an international art sensation – a once in a lifetime event of Picasso’s most prolific creative period – show opening at the Gagosian Gallery in London, June 2010. This volume features 3 single and 4 double gatefold illustrations and includes a detachable 23-page booklet of Picasso’s pencil and ink drawings. During the decade after the end of World War II Picasso began to spend more and more time in the Cote d’Azur where he began drawing on the Mediterranean sources that had inspired him in earlier years. Picasso’s return to the south marked a return to a family life as well – which in turn inspired him in the studio. In the 1950s his sculpture work evolved and he expanded into ceramics, lithography, printing and graphic design techniques. This latest Picasso exhibition from the Gagosian Gallery features a more private side to these prolific years – a dazzling coming together paintings, sculptures, prints and ceramics – many provided by of the pieces by Picasso’s grandson, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso and curated by Mr. Ruiz-Picasso and Picasso’s acclaimed biographer, Sir John Richardson. This is certain to garner as much press attention as Gagosian’s “must see” Picasso Mosqueteros exhibition in 2009.
