“Gaines thoroughly explores the innerworkings of the most grownup kiddie show in TV history. Pull up a Chairry and enjoy” (Michael Musto, Village Voice). Between 1986 and 1991, a pandemic swept the nation. Symptoms included talking to furniture, checking the refrigerator for signs of life, and a desire to SCREAM REAL LOUD every time a “secret word” was spoken. For five years, Saturday morning television infect nearly ten million people a week with Pee-wee Fever. Following the twenty-fifth anniversary of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, the behind-the-scenes story of this groundbreaking, successful, and still revered children’s program is told for the first time by those who experienced it, with never-before-seen photos. Come on in and take a look Inside Pee-wee’s Playhouse. “With his inspired, lunatic Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Paul Reubens showed a generation of television viewers that it’s okay to be different. Caseen Gaines has crafted a meticulously researched look at the origin, production, and legacy of this landmark series that is every bit as educational and entertaining as the show it chronicles.” —Jeremy Kinser, senior editor, The Advocate “Caseen not only reveals the genius behind Paul Reubens’ pop culture creation, but also takes us inside Pee-wee’s Playhouse to meet the fascinating team that brought it to life.” —Noah Levy, senior news editor, In Touch Weekly “A must for any Pee-wee fan. Gaines unearths a significant moment in pop culture with the care of an archaeologist, and the vibrant humor of Pee-wee himself.” —John Ortved, author of The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History This book is not affiliated with Pee-wee’s Playhouse nor is it endorsed or approved by Paul Reubens

Peewee’s in the box! Peewee the dog doesn’t know any tricks, “not a single one not even how to roll over not even how to shake hands but never mind he is so teeny weeny that everybody loves him,” the clown, the fat lady, the thin man, the huge tall giant, the strong baby, the acrobats, the elephants, and all the other amazing performers in the wonderful circus of the man with the quite tall red hat. But then something unexpected happens that threatens to bring Peewee’s time under the Big Top to an end. Now Open the Box is a beautiful example of the art of Dorothy Kunhardt, the author of the timeless classic Pat the Bunny and the pioneering picture book Junket Is Nice. Here Kunhardt speaks with wonderfully reassuring directness to children’s hopes and fears while making magic out of the simplest things.

Walter "Pee-wee" Harris is a fictional Boy Scout who has appeared in several series of boy's books by Percy Keese Fitzhugh as well as in a long-running comic strip in the magazine Boys' Life. In Pee-Wee Harris: Fixer, Pee Wee promotes scouting, takes a trip to see an exclusive New York show, and helps a lost child. Excerpt: "Pee-wee Harris, or rather the left leg of Pee-wee Harris, emerged from an upper side window of his home and was presently followed by the rest of Pee-wee, clad in his scout suit. He crept cautiously along an ornamental shingled projection till he reached the safety of the porch roof, where he stood pulling up his stocking and critically surveying the shady street below him."

Haunters of used book stores may have spotted the mystery and adventure books of Percy Keese Fitzhugh (1876-1950). They were phenomenally popular in the 1920s, and millions of copies were sold. Fitzhugh was an American author. His first known work, The Goldenrod Story Book, was published in 1906. The bulk of his work, having a Boy Scouting theme, revolves around the fictional town of Bridgeboro, New Jersey. Characters included Tom Slade, Pee-wee Harris, Roy Blakely, and Westy Martin. Fitzhugh's Scouting based books were very popular with children and adults. His characters became so real to his readers that it was not uncommon for Percy to receive fan mail addressed to the characters themselves. In the 1930s, attempting to branch out, he began writing the Hal Keen Mystery Series (10 titles) under the pseudonym Hugh Lloyd. They were followed by another mystery series, Skippy Dare, though this one only lasted for 3 books. Neither of these series achieved the popularity of his Scout work. This volume contains the first 7 Pee-Wee Harris books: Pee-wee Harris (1922) Pee-wee Harris on the Trail (1922) Pee-wee Harris in Camp (1922) Pee-wee Harris in Luck (1922) Pee-wee Harris Adrift (1922) Pee-wee Harris, F.O.B. Bridgeboro (1923) Pee-wee Harris, Fixer (1924) If you enjoy this volume of the MEGAPACK® series, check out the more than 400 other volumes, covering children's literature, science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance—and much, much more!
