This study evaluated 6 specific preventive treatments. Four treatments are for asphalt concrete surfaced (flexible) pavements: chip seals; crack sealing; slurry seals; and thin overlays. Two treatments are for portland cement concrete surfaced pavements: joint and crack sealing; and undersealing. Performance of the pavement sections with the treatments was compared with the performance of a similar pavement section without the treatment. Performance is measured in terms of pavement distress, roughness profile, surface friction, and structural capacity. All of the flexible pavement test sections and most of the rigid pavement test sections have been constructed. Performance data are being collected. This report discusses the experimental design, project selection, construction, data collection, analysis, and future activities of the pavement maintenance effectiveness project.

Comprehensive and practical, Pavement Asset Management provides an essential resource for educators, students and those in public agencies and consultancies who are directly responsible for managing road and airport pavements. The book is comprehensive in the integration of activities that go into having safe and cost-effective pavements using the best technologies and management processes available. This is accomplished in seven major parts, and 42 component chapters, ranging from the evolution of pavement management to date requirements to determining needs and priority programming of rehabilitation and maintenance, followed by structural design and economic analysis, implementation of pavement management systems, basic features of working systems and finally by a part on looking ahead. The most current methodologies and practical applications of managing pavements are described in this one-of-a-kind book. Real world up-to-date examples are provided, as well as an extensive list of references for each part.

Road asset management is one of the top priorities of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Transport and Trade Facilitation Strategy 2020. The implementation of performance-based road maintenance contracts (PBCs)—an essential element of road asset management—promotes effective and efficient maintenance of road networks. Well-designed PBCs keep roads in predefined good condition at relatively low cost. This guide aims to help policy makers in CAREC member countries understand and implement PBCs. After a brief history of the development of PBCs, it discusses the various types of PBCs and their relative advantages and disadvantages. It highlights PBC implementation in selected developed, developing, and transitional countries, including CAREC member countries, to illustrate best practices.
